Anybody hear of Amon Amarth?

I’ve NEVER been one for death metal (or viking metal as it’s labeled for these guys) But I have to say I’m really diggin’ “Cry of the Black Birds”
You can check the You TUbe Video out here:

Like it seems with all death metal I’ve heard, I’m not really keen on sound of the vocals but the music itself almost seems like poetry. SO Needless to say I’ve been buring up my speakers with this song.

Amon Amarth?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

Hail grumpysmurf!

He is the new troo klvt sexy.

Don’t you have homework to do?

I find Amon Amarth’s brand of melodic death metal to be quite boring to listen to but I have to say that they were really good live when I saw them 3 years ago and then again 1 year ago. Actually, they had a simulated viking battle on stage during one of the shows, which was really out there. I find this is true for a lot of metal bands though - while the albums seem too monotonous and uninspired, the band is often quite capable of providing a really fun live performance.

EDIT: Actually I just became aware of something - the second time I saw AA live, they played right after Ministry (Wacken Open Air). Funny little coincidence

Yeah for the most part most of the Death Metal I have heard soudns the same and I can’t really tell one band from the other but AA stood out to me because of the Melody. SO are there more death metal bands at there like this with the melody that runs through the low growl?

I don’t know about the low growl thing but I like a lot of death/doom/black/viking metal stuff. Some bands that I would suggest would be :

Akercocke
Opeth
Dimmu Borgir
Cradle Of Filth
Finntroll
Black Dahlia Murder

Anyhoo…

Black Dahlia Murder

Funny, i work with the sister of one of their guitarists. I knew they were big around here but i always thought that was just cause they were from here.

I always thought AA was ripping off Bolt Thrower quite a bit, and although the music isnt exactly the same, there are some very big similarities, such as the mid-tempo (for death metal) compositions and melodic leads that carry the song. Otherwise, I think the old Swedish bands like Entombed (the album “Clandestine” ranks as my personal favorite death metal album of all time) and Edge Of Sanity (good albums - “Spectral Sorrows”, “Purgatory Afterglow”, “Crimson”) play more or less on the same wavelengths as AA.

Most death metal really isn’t my cup of tea.
The only thing that even remotely comes close to sating the beast within is Brujeria, hands down.

Yeah… I could care less about CoF’s lyrics and singing style, but they do put on a decent show and the music is pretty decent. I can’t understand how you could lump Opeth in with Amorphis though. There is nothing similiar in their sounds that I can hear at all…

Peace!

Opeth is far more progressive and also far more boring, lol.
I actually liked those ‘alternative’ albums Amorphis released with that non-growling vocalist though.

I don’t like much of what I’ve heard by Opeth, but I hear they are " OMG THE BEST THING, LIKE EVER".

And as for CoF… eww… I liked a few songs of Midian ages ago, but yeah… not my cup of tea, I think it was after seeing one of their home videos and they all seemed so try-hard… but some of their stuff is ok, if your into that sort of thing.

I’m not a huge fan of that kind of metal really… the closest thing I’m into would be Strapping Young Lad, not sure why but I really dig Townsend and Co…
Heh, I heard a townsend side project years back, was really cool, like cartoon music, can’t remember the band though.
