another grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance

DragonForce, “Heroes Of Our Time”
Judas Priest, “Nostradamus”
Metallica, “My Apocalypse”
Ministry, “Under My Thumb”
Slipknot, “Psychosocial”

I’m putting my money on Metallica walking away with it though

Judging from this video there was no way that UMT should have been nominated.

I wonder where Al got the hand costume?

Was the year in metal really that slow?

The Grammys are always out of touch.
Ministry gets nominated every year though - I wonder if Mrs. J has friends on the nomination committee or something.

Ministry being on this list and with a cover song no less just baffles me completely. Actually, all of the nominations are really mediocre ‘metal’ music at best; however, I’d imagine they did sell pretty well this year, either due to lingering sentiments (JP, Metallica) or being extremely commercial and appealing to the lowest common denominator (DF, Slipknot). I really doubt Ministry’s sales are anywhere close to the other nominees’ though.

The year 2008 was not bad at all for metal though. Some quality records were released. I really wonder how the Grammy people choose what bands to nominate.

umt

I thought that song kind of sucked.

“Kind of”?

A Ministry song (cover song that is) a grammy nomination? hmmm?!? Makes NO fucking sense, but whatever i’ll be pulling for Ministry. And DragonForce, WTF is that a pc game. Bad year for u metal heads :frowning:

Nah, Dragonforce should win it, really.

They’re ludicrously amazing.

I don’t know if you’re joking or not, but I’ve always considered DragonForce a guilty pleasure. Sure, they’re technical experts - and they blow their wad on cheesy power-metal instead of the intense prog they could be doing. That, to me, indicates a lot of balls, and a true investment in so-called “power metal.”

I’m completely serious, largely for the reasons you mention. I’m certain better metal came out this past year, but none of it is on the Grammy list.

Yeah, the Grammys were never a barometer of good ANYTHING, let alone metal. My pick for best metal album of the year, should anyone care, is Genghis Tron’s BOARD UP THE HOUSE. Brilliant.

Best metal this year for me is Esoteric’s “Maniacal Vale”… Genghis Tron is alright though, and so is Textures’ “Silhouettes”.

Either that or Al has some friends and connections. As much as I hate metallica, I just don’t see how ministry can even be nominated to the point of competing with them and the others. Ministry isn’t and hasn’t been mainstream for several years, so it’s beyond me on how they keep getting nominated. Bad Blood was likely because of it being in a soundtrack and so on, but the recent stuff? I just don’t get it. Do they even get radio play? Likely not.

I can understand Metallica being nominted. Death Magnetic was a welcome return. And this is coming from someone who refused to listen to Metallica for twelve years.

I’m going to play some Ministry today on my radio program here in Melbourne. Won’t be Bad Blood tho’.

Well the way it works once an artist in nominated, there are X amount on industry insiders and artists that get a shitload of tracks by various artists and are supposed to listen to them and pick their fav. So i’m sure after a while of dealing with all the pop dreck, people just start checking off on name recognition alone. They could have nominated like, Jarboa, boris, nachmystium, sunn 0, and metalica and the big M would still win based on their name. Sad really

I have always said Bad Blood is the worst Ministry song ever, worse than anything on Rio and Last Sucker. But i have to admit Dark Side Of The Moon has grown on me Eurika Pile is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Wow. Under My Thumb is easily one of the worst abortions of Ministry’s career. To have one of the darkest industrial bands end their farewell tour set with an upbeat Rolling Stones cover and a balloon drop was mindbogglingly terrible.(And I’m even more of an idiot for going to 3 shows on this abortion of a farewell tour.)
Do these Grammy idiots have a hard-on for covers or what? First they finally give Motorhead a Grammy, not for any of their own stuff, but for a Metallica cover. Now this. To have my favorite band turn into a trainwreck was pretty crushing, to see these mainstream idiots give Al gratification for this stupid covers album is even worse. I only hope Mrs. J runs off with Sin, takes all Al’s money, and he is forced to reunite with Paul Barker.

the very last show of culatour was ended with “what a wonderful world”, which isn’t actually a better choice than “under my thumb”, actually.

I remember one year Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden or whoever won Best Metal song and the band was like “Huh? It’s not a metal song.”

Hah! I remember that. Egads…it’s even in 4/4…

Fuck you guys, I like “Under My Thumb.”
