From Chicago Magazine’s list of the 40 Greatest Chicago Records of All Time

“This list of the 40 greatest Chicago records of all time raises a million questions, including: What counts as a “Chicago record”? What does “greatest” mean? And just who do we think we are? We classify a Chicago record as a nonclassical recording by an artist who is local by birthright or who adopted Chicago as home—or at least lived in town at the time the recording was made.”

Not good enough for no. 18 but R Kelly is? The integrity of that comp took a big hit on that one. LORAH is better than all those other albums (at least the ones I’m familiar with) put together.

Some of those deserve to be ahead of Ministry - Curtis Mayfield, Big Black, Cheap Trick - some not so much.

Outside of the tiny college rock audience has Tortoise made that much of an impact? Kanye West? Andrew Bird? How about we see how their stuff is perceived in 10 years or so before we start putting them on “greatest” lists, hm?

Yeah, I’ll take Siamese Dream and even Wilco, but Liz Phair?

Yeah, I’ll take Siamese Dream and even Wilco, but Liz Phair?

Gotta say I think “Exile in Guysville” is more historically important than Land of Rape and Honey, though I love them both.

Yeah, I saw this list a while back, and while I don’t necessarily agree with it, it isn’t that horrible as far as these “top whatever lists” that are so popular in magazines today go, especially considering Chicago magazine is such a yuppie/affluent older white person publication.

Yeah, Liz Phair actually does belong on the list.
And she’s way hotter than Al, too.

I don’t get why Wilco are number one. At all.

Because the writer of the article is a Wilco fan. But it’s true, their overall impact doesn’t merit their position that high on the list.

I don’t get why Wilco are number one. At all.

Wilco is very highly regarded here in the Chi. Although I myself think that “Summerteeth” is a much better album than “YHF”.

And Cheap Trick deserves more than 1 mention. “In Color” and “Heaven Tonight” were both better albums than the one that ChiMag selected.

Yeah, top X lists are pretty dumb. Unless I do 'em, then they’re truth. Still, #19 ain’t bad.
