American candy

Haven’t managed to find a huge selection down under but I tried a Tootsie Roll today. Wish I hadn’t.

You picked one of the weakest in the history of US candy…

Though, oddly enough, vanilla and lemon flavored Tootsie Rolls are the bomb.

Really?Never tried those…

sent a bushel of candy to friends in finland. oreos included. oreos seem to be the lost treasure in europe…

then again, tim tams are great!

I like the fruit tootsie rolls too: fruit punch, blue, red. Vanilla is good too though.

They have oreos across the pond, but the American ones taste different (better).
Kind of like how a Mars bar and a Milky Way taste different (a Mars bar is sweeter).

I have a friend in Australia who brings me Cherry Ripe bars when he comes over. I saw them in London in Camden market too.

Really?Never tried those…

They’re called “Flavor Rolls” by Tootsie, and there are a number of flavors of them including orange, lemon, lime, and vanilla. You will ONLY find them in bulk style variety sacks as they are only made in the tiny midget size and are never sold individually or in any of the more loggish sizes.

I like to smash together the lemon and the vanilla or the vanilla with original chocolate/fudge flavor and eat 'em that way. But that’s 'cause I’m a candy pimp and roll like a straight up king, yo!

While not exactly candy, the one thing I always pick up when I’m in the US are Combos. The cheddar cheese pretzel ones.

Do they even make Mars bars anymore? I haven’t seen one in years.

We have Mars bars in Canada…

This is a bit of a confusing topic on both sides of the ocean, so let me help clear things up . . .

In the US back in the day we had a candy bar called MARS. This was basically the SNICKERS but with Almonds instead of peanuts. This candy bar has since been renamed and repackaged and now is marketed as SNICKERS ALMOND.

There are no nuts in a British MARS bar.

When Europeans (and pretty much anyone outside of North America) refer to a MARS bar, they are referring to the original candy bar which is more equivalent to our MILKY WAY. It has the malty nougat, the caramel, and the milk chocolate. It is sweeter, though, a bit maltier, and heavier on the fluffy nougat than it is on the caramel. Personally, I prefer the American MILKY WAY to the British MARS bar. The Brit version is just too sickly sweet for my taste.

Now, to make things more confusing . . . . there is also a MILKY WAY bar marketed in UK/ Europe. But . . . it is sans-caramel closely resembles what us Yanks get served as THREE MUSKETEERS.

Of all the above variations my favorite is the American SNICKERS ALMOND (what I thought, until about 8 years ago, was a MARS bar). I am also a huge fan of the American MILKY WAY MIDNITE which is denser, has harder nougat, and features dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate.

Anyway, yeah, I don’t know why the company switched the same names for the same products and created a real clusterf*** of a catalog, but it’s all good.

Good litle history lesson there…I agree on the Midnight Milky Ways…I dig those more than the originals…

Candy Bars I no longer see anymore(guessing they either stopped production or aren’t sold in my part of the country):

Clark
Zero
Bar Six(loved those kind of like Kit Kat)
Sugar Babies
Charleson Chew
Peanut Butter Twix

and I never see Chicklets anymore…especially those mini multi colored ones

Don’t see PB Max anymore either.

Chickletts are alive and well in mexico at least as of 6-7 years ago

Sugar Babies
Charleson Chew
Peanut Butter Twix

Still got em in Cali.

Oh yeah I forgot about the PB Max…those were good…how about Marathon Bars? Those disappeared also…and Whatchamacallit’s vanished for a while but then came back…

If you guys liked the Whatchamacallit and PB Maxx, you should give a try to the TAKE 5 by Hershey. It’s totally badass. Nougat, Caramel, Peanut Butter, Peanuts, Chocolate, and PRETZELS. It’s an explosion of awesomeness.

Nutrageous is killer too.

Oh dude…that’s my shit…Take 5 is my favorite new(I know it isn’t that new…but at least of the last decade)candy bar in a long while…good call…

Anyone remember Sky Bar? I’d have to do a little research but if memory serves it was 4 chocolate squares but each one had a different fillling…I think caramel, marshmellow, peanut butter and I can’t remember the other…I never see those anymore…

Sky Bar doesn’t have a regular run nowadays. They still make it, but distribution is limited mostly to specialty shops that have olde-tyme novelty stuff and whatnot. Sometimes you can also find them in the uppity markets/delis like Bristol Farms and such.

Oh,I see…always loved the oddball shit…

The biggest pain in the ass candy were those little dots they used to put on paper…and you would pull them off and the paper would always stick to the fucking candy…they used to sell those bastards at Farrell’s!!! I hated those things…

or remember the little wax bottles with the strange candy flavored mystery juice in them…you had to bite off the nasty wax to get to the juice…weird shit…
