Al's image

I dont think there can be any debate that Al’s cowboy-hat and leather image played an important role in defining the band’s identity. There seem to be a few more rock artists out there with a very similar image though and I’m really wondering who thought of it first…
Does anyone know when Al first thought of adopting this image?

The other two artist who most famously used this image were Rob Zombie and Carl McCoy (from Fields Of The Nephilim). Rob Zombie claims to always have had this look since he began playing with White Zombie in around 1986 or so. Carl McCoy had the image since 1984 or maybe even earlier (and he still has it today).

Yeah, this is a pretty superficial and pointless thread but I thought it would make for some interesting conversation… Does anyone know any other artists using a similar look?

cowboys [:P]

Raymond Watts of Pig/KMFDM.

Personally, I always thought it looked pretty dumb.

Chris Connelly sported it in many of his early Revco promos. That was as early as 1987.

Al wore that damn taxicab-ish cap for years, up until 1996. He started that cowboy hat thing around that time as well, right when he started living in Texas (go figure).

well he got the cowboy hat on in the In Case You video so round about 1990 he started?

i think it’s a cool look, better than goggles

i think it’s a cool look, better than goggles

and definately more cool than his now adopted “bandana” look.

Mandy Lion has had a similar look for a long time. But he sucks, so there you go.

God damn this thread is fucking stupid

Stupid thread or not, I just had to mention Andrew Eldritch of The Sisters of Mercy sporting that long black hair + cowboy hat as early as 1985. Infact, when I look at Al in the “Lay Lady Lay” video, it somehow reminds me of Andrew singing “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” in the Wake Tour. Funny, aren’t both songs originally by Bob Dylan?

I’d have to say that Al looks his best either in the Revenge video or the Stigmata video. Yeah, probably the Stigmata video, if only he didn’t pluck his eyebrows (they’re 100% natural in the Revenge video, but I just love the little mohawk, hah!). Sometimes I have a hard time believing it’s the same person!

Yes… I’m a New Wave fan [:P]

you should see his same old madness video look!

Something I stumbled across ebay a couple years back, push pins from their With Sympathy days!

I have your new avatar as a bumper sticker! Too bad I can’t ever use it…great pic, though!

I have an old picture of the RevCo in a magazine from 88 somewhere at my home with Al already wearing the cowboy hat…
