Yes, it’s really him (singing). He admitted it to a friend many years ago.
Enjoy!

Holy Weirdness Batman! Thanks for finding this, and it is unmistakably Al.

I remember seeing the Old Style beer commerical a couple times back in the '80s, but had no idea about this. I even looked up some Shasta commericals on youtube a couple of weeks ago to show to my friend who had never heard of the drink, but completely missed this.

Ok…that rules.

Yes, I saw two Old Style commercials that featured 30 sec. each of Halloween and All Day, back around '88/'89. I was hardcore into Wax Trax at the time, so that was a shock to hear those songs on TV.

Yes, it was quite a shock and who could forget the Stigmata video playing on the tv in that episode of Miami Vice? That is my biggest memory of that series outside of the Jan Hammer theme music.

BEST. THING. EVER.

FUCKING AMAZING! FUCK YEAH!

I really want to try this soda now!

After seeing this video, I totally believe that he did have to deal with corporate fucks.

This is the best post about Al in the history of prongs. I wanna SHASTA! Oh, the great taste! This was '83? Wemp, what’s your knowledge of this?

What a great morning on prongs: The High Confessions sounds cool and now this.

I never would have recalled that on my own. But I do now.

The commercial may have hit in 83, but I think the recording was done in 82. Lots of American TV commercials are conceived, written and produced in Chicago. Chicago Recording Company used to do a lot of them and I think that’s how Al got the work.

Wow. I actually think I remember that commercial from when I was a kid. Never would have guessed, but that’s definitely Al. This calls for a remix.

Looks like I have a new favorite Ministry song.

This calls for a remix.

Definitely one for the prongs collection that’s in the works. Al could be the next Christian Bale.

SHASTA!

I like to think So-So Life was inspired by So-So Soda.

Damn, I remember this commercial. And yes, that is so clearly Al that I’m a little surprise nobody noticed this earlier! Awesome.

And that Same Ol’ Madness was inspired by Same Ol’ Cola.

Here’s the big question Wemp- Was there another version of the commercial that actually featured Al on screen, playing a white piano?
Two friends claim they remember this, which is what got me hunting down old Shasta commercials to began with.
I found the one with Al’s voice, but not the holy grail of Al on screen…

Your CRC theory makes sense, and would tend to put a damper on him actually being in the commercial, as the filming was probably done in LA.
BTW- were you at the Comiskey Park 1983 show?

Yeah, Al wasn’t famous at the time - no reason to use him in the video shoot. Just hire a guy with pretty hands to look like he’s playing the piano and you’re good to go.

Your friends’ memories are probably faulty. The mind does that.

I don’t recall seeing him ever play a piano, in a commercial or otherwise. You need to know how to play with both hands. Besides have you ever tried to play piano, smoke a cigarette and hold a glass of wine all at the same time? It’s impossible. [;)]

I was indeed at Comiskey in '83, for about an hour. I arrived, played the short set with the band (no soundcheck) and left with Cate, who was not yet my wife, shortly thereafter. I think we went to a restaurant back on the Northside.

The whole thing was kinda surreal. I couldn’t really hear anything in the monitors, and the house PA just kept echoing back off of the grandstand. I kept an eye on Stevo for cues. I think one of the reasons I was anxious to leave was because I thought we sucked because I couldn’t hear…but I was told by a few people that wasn’t the case.

awesome!

this is what PRONGS is all about! and thanks to wemp for always sharing his memories and perspective with us.
