So I got my kid a little tiny acoustic to mess around with and found I was spending more time tuning it and playing with it. I thought I’d probably enjoy learning on my own. Looks like the best rated starter guitar is the Seagull S6, but this is a little more than I’d like to spend. You guitar players recommend anything?
Yamaha, Epiphone, Ibanez…in that order.
I wouldn’t consider any other brands if I was in the market for an inexpensive acoustic guitar.
I would suggest the same three that wempathy mentioned. My acoustic growing up was an Epiphone (nylon), and it served me well.

I have a Ibanez V70CE and still love it, I’ve had it for three or so years. Honestly to me, go into a store, try out the Acoustics, find one you like. Get it setup, and get a new pack of strings put on and start learning.
go to the pawn shop and find something cheap! see how much time you spend with it for a couple of months and if it’s a decent amount of time, something you think you’re gonna stick with, then go get yourself something decent at the guitar store! I recommend the ibanez, always have excellent action and thin necks …

Well… I play a LOT of acoustic these days and I hate to say it but I go completely against the grain from most of what I’ve read here. I can’t stand Ibanez acoustics. Too much treble and mid and not enough low end for me.
Epiphone is a great way to go though. Yamaha is ok, but they might as well be Ibanez in my opinon.
The one thing I read here that I do agree with is do the pawn shop thing. Go in and find some cheap piece of crap and play on it for awhile and see how it goes. I still have an old “Westfield” (I think it is a division of Martin) that I love using over all my other acoustics.
If you do decide to stick with it, go Epiphone or Martin. Great action, mid size necks that anyone can get their fingers around and great tone. Honestly, while I might get flamed for this, I find that the crappier the guitar is the better it sounds. It’s a very Cobain’ish attitude but it seems right. You start buying these $600+ guitars and yeah, they sound great and clean, but who wants that? I want a guitar that I can FEEL.
Most importantly (and yes, you can all flame me now) stay the hell away from Fenders. They are NOT good guitars. It may just be me but I can’t stand them.
Peace!

Martin if you have the $$$$ to drop. Otherwise, I personally own and play a Yamaha. Mine’s an acoustic/electric actually, but i hardly ever plug it in. I chose it because it’s a great sounding acoustic, the rest of it was bonus.
I’ve been dicking around with acoustic guitar myself lately.
I’ve taught myself three chords which, as any Ramones fan will tell you, is enough for a song. Now I just need to learn to play them in the right order for three minutes straight…
