Dubstep came from the UK Garage, Grime and 2 Step music genres. It also features elements of Dub, Techno, Hip Hop, Industrial and Drum’n’Bass depending on the producer.
The basic foundation of Dubstep is 140BPM although this is now being warped by many of the top producers nowadays.
The good thing about Dubstep is there is some friggin amazing music being made by many producers.
The bad thing about Dubstep is there is a heap of crappy music being made by many producers.
Basically you have to find the producers who make the kind of Dubstep you like.
If you like heavy Industrial music…the Dubstep producers to check are Goth Trad, Distance and Kryptic Minds.
If you like ghostly laidback type Dubstep you want Burial.
If you want a Minimal Dub Techno vibe in your Dubstep you want Scuba, Shackleton and 2562.
If you want a Dub Reggae vibe you want RSD, 6blocc, aXXo and Mala
If you want some crazy next level shit that’s hard to explain you want Untold, Zomby and Ramadanman.
If you want generic mainstream wobble Dubstep you want Skream, Benga and Caspa…although to be fair Skream and Benga also produce some great shit as well.
Then you have the Purple Bristol sound courtesy of folk like Joker.
Then of course you have Scandanavian Skweee!!!
The mind really does boggle.
Oh shit I almost forgot…Pangaea is another guy that makes absolutely brilliant music. His one sided 12" Memories was definately in my top 3 12"s of last year…pure bliss.
