Yeah, pretty messed up. Unfortunately some of those early responses aren’t that surprising. It’s really not that bad in the south overall, as long as you stay in somewhat urban/suburban areas, but I’m occasionally surprised. There have been many people I’ve thought were fine until they opened up their mouths in that sort of way. Kind of disappointing that someone can have that narrow of a world view and strange that they don’t realize how much it shows their ignorance.
It’s been removed.
This situation plays out as you could expect it would, it’s the same in other countries. A few douches condone the racist behaviour, some more are disgusted by it (largely young and/or female) while most do nothing. I think the people who do nothing may not necessarily agree with what’s going on but they dont want to get “involved” because they are either too shy/quiet/passive or maybe they are not angered enough to speak out. But there’s also a consideration that some people would only speak out or walk out if someone else does it before them. When people are not expecting such a situation they may not be prepared to act how they might want to (in hindsight or if they knew it was coming). From this video I think most of the passive people were elderly, they may not want any drama so to speak but at the same rate this does not excuse them. The actor behind the counter was patently ridiculous with his remarks (obviously an actor), it would have been difficult to just listen to it. Also the professor who they were talking to watching the clip comes across as a bit of a lightweight. Either the piece was edited to make him look simplistic or else he was just that. Concepts of defensiveness (after feeling threatened in some way) and justice are not just American ideas as he seems to imply, they are universal.
Racism in America is still particularly baffling as it is a “fresh” country largely made up of immigrants. But racism is racism, its worldwide and invariably ridiculous.
And I’ll say this; I’ve yet to come across an intelligent and likeable nationalist. To me nationalism, especially ethnic forms of it, is an outdated and irrelevant belief.
ill second that nationalism remark. people, and perhaps some Americans in particular, should really do themselves a favor and travel the world a little bit.
afra. where’s my pink triangle?
as much as we hope others are as smart as we, they’re not.
the vomit put forth now on the internet is relentless, and sift through the garbage. i grew up with racism and i’m white.
you treat EVERYONE fairly. period.
i have never known anything else, and perhaps that’s why i have so many friends. who knew?
i was the minority, and i treated everyone fair and square.
(back to the book)
Not only should mericans travel the world i think it’s a necessity… I mean, it’s amazing the ignorance of history that exists in this country and the acceptance of it. If you go to say europe, you see old villas, roads, buildings… history… past… coexisting with present… you see, inadvertidly art of varying degrees in architecture and what do we have in america to rival that? Strip malls and fucking bus stops.
and i’m not even going to get into the sheer ignorance that people have that there is no “out there” but only “in here”. which is a statement that can go to refer people’s views on life outside the country, thier little world, and right down to what exists in thier little heads.
