What’s all this ‘torrent’ stuff?
How do I use it?
Do I need any additional software?
I run VISTA on my laptop, if that helps.
Would welcome any advice on this.
Thank you all.

…continuing my Embarrassing gigs post…er…Sting, Texas, Yes (early 80s)…help!
NOT Embarassing AT ALL…going on a school trip to see Frank Zappa in London in 1979…absolute genius, I remember thinking ‘what the fuck is THIS?’ I’ve loved him ever since.
should be all the info you could need - but basically you install a program that grabs the .torrent file and then it opens it and begins to download the file - as you download however it also uploads parts of the file that you have already recieved to any users who do not have that part of the file. it is generally considered good practice to let your uploads continue after you have finished the download.
torrents…
well the general idea is that when you download a “torrent” you’re downloading a file that is a reffernece to other files. the other files being the “goal” files. for example… lets say you download DarkSideOfTheMoon.torrent. that file will be downloaded (with your torrent program) then your torrent program will go out and start downloading the mp3s of all the songs. here’s an example of how a torrent program gets the file list and downloads them.
while you are downloading you are also uploading to others that have downloaded the torrent file. this is called a “swarm”.
here is a screenshot of a torrent being downloaded with the “peer” list at the bottom. these are the people in your “swarm” that you are uploading to and downloading from.
