Well, then you’re not going to like Bill Hicks. He’s got this big cult around him, but the fact is, he didn’t actually tell jokes. He just ranted about stuff that made him angry.
Define “jokes”. Hicks didn’t go for your usual airline food gags…but thats what people liked. Also, I believe “good comedy” should be defined as …things that make the beholder laugh.
Also, lets say you’re right, and he didn’t tell jokes, he just ranted about things that mad him angry (in fact, lets up the ante a bit and explicity state your implicit idea that hicks’ act was devoid of humour). Well, I for one, don’t care. I listen to the things Bill says because a) they interest me, and b) they made me laugh, despite the lack of “jokes”, which i covered above.
Thing is, a) is the more important of the 2 points. Bill Hicks is regularly regarded as a comedian. Often labelled a philosopher as well…which can come off as pretentious I suppose. But either way…the topics he discussed, the points of view he put forward, they interested people, including me. The humour was there, but it was the ideas, the points of view, that were key.
In any case, jokes or not, he made crowds laugh (and seethe with disgust in equal measure, it would seem). Thus he’s engaging in? …Comedy, that’s right.
Also, it wasn’t just things that enraged Bill that made up the topics of his act, he often discussed things he loved as well. Mushrooms. Pornography. Pot. Jackie’s ass when she gets on the hood of that car.
…oh yeah, reach for that brain baby, goddamn.
