A Bill Hicks flick on the cards

http://www.rte.ie/arts/2008/0819/crower.html

Russell Crowe as Bill Hicks? He does look like him a bit I suppose. But if there was to be a big studio behind this project it would be horrendous; just imagine how cringeworthy it would be Crowe as Hicks finding out that he had the big C and he crying like a baby in someone’s arms… [:(]

Lets hope they keep it small.

Also, I wonder if Denis Leary would play Denis Leary

If Russell Crowe is playing Bill it’s pretty safe to say it’s a big studio backing it.

Personally i think a movie about Bill is a terrible idea.

They should just release his “Relentless” show in cinemas across the world!

Meh. Mild Hicks fan.

Still a decent film might be possible. Just look at Lenny with Dustin Hoffman.

Lenny was a great film…it won’t be repeated for a Hicks version though.

Bill Hicks and Richard Pryor were the best there ever was and will be as far as i’m concerned.

lenny was great because of valerie perrine. she still lives in LA.

I’m a big fan of good comedy. However, I don’t know anything about this guy. I found a few clips on youtube and skimmed his wiki page. Still kind of don’t understand why I haven’t heard of him.

THIS. A film that isn’t HIM will be garbage.

There’s no connection between having a gun and shooting someone with it, and not having a gun, and not shooting someone.

Relentless is great stuff. You don’t boil pizza!

I’m a big fan of good comedy.

Well, then you’re not going to like Bill Hicks. He’s got this big cult around him, but the fact is, he didn’t actually tell jokes. He just ranted about stuff that made him angry.

Define “jokes”. Hicks didn’t go for your usual airline food gags…but thats what people liked. Also, I believe “good comedy” should be defined as …things that make the beholder laugh.

Also, lets say you’re right, and he didn’t tell jokes, he just ranted about things that mad him angry (in fact, lets up the ante a bit and explicity state your implicit idea that hicks’ act was devoid of humour). Well, I for one, don’t care. I listen to the things Bill says because a) they interest me, and b) they made me laugh, despite the lack of “jokes”, which i covered above.

Thing is, a) is the more important of the 2 points. Bill Hicks is regularly regarded as a comedian. Often labelled a philosopher as well…which can come off as pretentious I suppose. But either way…the topics he discussed, the points of view he put forward, they interested people, including me. The humour was there, but it was the ideas, the points of view, that were key.

In any case, jokes or not, he made crowds laugh (and seethe with disgust in equal measure, it would seem). Thus he’s engaging in? …Comedy, that’s right.

Also, it wasn’t just things that enraged Bill that made up the topics of his act, he often discussed things he loved as well. Mushrooms. Pornography. Pot. Jackie’s ass when she gets on the hood of that car.

…oh yeah, reach for that brain baby, goddamn.

Finding some good from a disturbing incident. That’s what it’s all about.

That joke (or slant/observation, whatever) is typical of Hicks and it’s funny, Ringo has provided a fairly accurate summation of what he was like for anyone is unfamiliar with Hicks.

On Relentless, it was funny hearing the crowd resistance to Bill’s idea of having your dying loved ones euthanized by being used as stuntmen in action films. Going from memory here:

“Do you want your grandma to die slowly, in a sterile hospital room bed, or do you want her to meet Chuck Norris?!” “Did you see that? He kicked her head clean off of her body!” The way he delivers his lines is a big part of the equation, too. You really have to hear him say this stuff.

They just re-relased his book Love all the people… well it comes out according to amazon on sept 1st… but i already got a copy. somehow the store already had it. great book so far

You know why Denis Leary has a career and Bill Hicks didn’t? Cause there is “No Cure For Cancer!”
Late,
grmpysmrf

P.S. For those that think I am insensitive, “No Cure For Cancer” is the name of Denis Leary’s CD that ripped off about 1/2 of Hick’s material.

Dennis Miller did a fine job of ripping off hicks too there for a while… honestly i think, at least amungst the youth here, the only reasong bill is so well known is tool sampeld him for one of their best tracks and people went looking after hearing his rant on the war on drugs

thats how i found out about him…is that a problem?

So Bill Hicks is the “Lotsa fuckin’ drugs” guy? Righteous. [:)]

No. Bill was the “now not all drugs are good…some of them…are GREAT!”

Bill was the best there is, there was, there ever will be.

Bill is the “free to do anything so long as that freedom does not infringe upon the freedoms of another persons personal choice.” guy.

well no actually there isn’t… it’s just a statement, and I’m included in the above mentioned crowd

ah…thought it may have been a “anyone who found out about ministry after 2003 is a cunt!!!” style statement.
