I listed some of the openers I liked or went to the show for, though there were some others I enjoyed.
I saw Devo too… even got one of their ‘radiation’ suits. It was good, I totally agree with you… but it was sort of odd/disheartening/whatever to seem them having aged. I know that sounds really silly and superficial, but I’m sort of over the whole reunion trend everyone was doing. They played great, but compared to live footage I’ve seen of them when they were younger, it had nothing on that. The energy is, understandably, mitigated.
I agree, Evil - That old footage just blows me away! But, it was great seeing them just for the sake of it. I know the addage of age has caught up, but after the gig ended, i saw every guitar getting locked up, lights on, but yet the crowd chanted for 15 minutes and they came back on in their street clothes. Plus, i’m 40 and
still never had the chance to see them.
I wish. The only concerts around where I live now are Baptist Revivals. This place sucks. Wish I was back in Austin hanging with Ed. Oh well. At least we got 4" of snow yesterday for the kids. Never got that in TX.
North Texas gets some snow every now and then, but anything south of the metroplex doesnt get jackballs.
My list for 2009 (in no particular order). Ahh the joys of living in NYC…I’ll add more as I remember them:
White Out w/Thurston Moore
Bardo Pond
Hanzel und Gretyl
Werewolf Grehv
Skinny Puppy
Throbbing Gristle (x2)
Streep Sweeper
NIN
Janes Addiction
Graffiti Monster
Kites
The Prodigy
Black Dice
Animal Collective
Black Light Burns
Combichrist
White Mice
Sightings
AIDS Wolf
No Fun Fest Friday: (Bastard Noise, Thrones, Grey Wolves, Xeno and Oaklander, Carlos Giffoni)
No Fun Fest Sunday: (Skullflower, Prurient / Kevin Drumm, Black Pus, Emeralds, Cold Cave)
Climate change as peddled by the Al Gore’s of this world is not a hoax, but is unfortunately championed by the wrong people, like the aforementioned. The climate change the earth experiences at present does not lead just to warmer temperatures but more accurately to more extreme weather events; flooding, freezing, drought, etc. Climate change happens anyway but humans are speeding it up. Also, the earth will survive regardless of what we do, it’s just we may not.
I haven’t seen as many concerts this year as in the past, but saw some real gems:
Captured! by Robots
Leonard Cohen
Nick Cave + Bad Seeds
No-FI Soul Rebellion
The Jesus Lizard
The Legendary Shack Shakers
Southern Culture on the Skids
I also saw Pagliacci, my second opera, this time at the Lyric Opera House in Chicago rather than a community college. The production was stellar and breathtaking. If any of you get a chance to see a good production of Pagliacci or another opera take it by all means!
They were fun to see live, not epic or anything, but solid. The guitar player is a talented guitar picker, and the bassist is more than adequate on her instrument and not to hard on the eyes either!
I think it was '05 when I saw these two last time:
The Legendary Shack Shakers (opened for RHH)
Southern Culture on the Skids
In 2009:
SSSC/JA/NIN - Tampa
Combichrist/Julien K/Gen XX - Orlando
NIN (Io Echo/Mew/Health/Queen Kwong) (4x) - Los Angeles, CA
KMFDM (2x) - Orlando and St. Pete
Skinny Puppy - Orlando
I wasn’t even aware that Rob Zombie was still playing music, I thought he had committed himself to the butchering of classic horror franchises!
How was that Faith No More reunion anyway? I would have liked to caught this one but I probably didn’t have the cash at the time.
I would have liked to have seen Puppy but they were playing at the House of Blues, the worst establishment ever, so I passed. I wish Puppy would get rid of that Mark Walk fairy and start working with Rave again. Ogre’s voice has never sounded the same since he’s been gone.
