Jason Pettigrew is a freelance journalist based in Pennsylvania. He is an occasional contributor to SPIN and annotator of the photo book Had To Be There: A Visual History of the Explosive Pittsburgh Underground (2023). He is former Editor-In-Chief of Alternative Press.
I’m speaking on the panel along with Jason Pettigrew (the illustrious author) and S. Alexander Reed, the author of the industrial music history “Assimilate.” Our moderator will be globetrotting DJ Andi Harriman who is known in New York for her “Synthicide” nights.
There will be some snippets of LORAH outtakes/works in progress that I’m bringing along to play. These are direct from band master tapes and cassettes and never bootleged/shared.
Why? Are you someone important? (I’m sorry if that sounded rude) I know you’ve posted on and off here for a long while but I didn’t know you were connected with the band. who are you and what did you do with them?
Not “important” by any definition I would use, but I was a producer on the Wax Trax! documentary and have insight into how those records were made via years of research and relationships with people who worked on them. So sort of a historian/journalist perspective.
Jason interviewed me for the book specifically about the studio techniques they used because, via a circuitous bit of history, I have large chunks of the sample libraries from that era taken straight off the Fairlight.
I recall Al putting his Fairlight up for sale a few years ago. Was curious who acquired it and if anything was retrieved and/or preserved. About 15 years ago Alan Wilder of Depeche Mode auctioned off all of his old samplers and touring keyboards. Since then, many of those unique sounds and samples have been broadly shared and appear in cover bands and numerous fan videos.
