I watched some of the game today, and I thought overall the sport was dreadfully boring, the only part that caught my interest or attention was when offence approached the goal and threatened, and the goalie had to defend. Watching the players pass the ball back and forth around the center of the field seemed rather masturbatory.
Another thing I didn’t like is how they allow ties! In America all the major sports seem to have effective tiebreakers that determine a clear winner.
I think I’ll stick with baseball and hockey, thank you.
The U.S. v England game was shit and the other games so far have been shit as well, unfortunately. However we still have Brazil and Spain to see which hopefully will be more entertaining. The vuvuzelas are a big problem, people are turning off matches and players are getting pissed off too. The guy who organised the World Cup in SA is considering banning them. Happy days.

It is the group phase for the first two weeks where matches can end in a draw. Once it hits the knock out stages (on June 26th) matches have to have a winner and loser.

Germany played some total football last night. The Aussies were a mess. Tim Convict getting sent off has probably ended their chances of going further. The Aus tactics were a complete failure; trying to play offside trap against a disciplined team like Germany is a comlete waste of time, the Aus defence had no adaptability and could have lost by more. The Germany - Australia game was the first good game of the tournament (for neutrals, anyway), hopefully we see Germany and less France & England.
Dying to see how the Dutch play in an hour or so. They could be the dark horses if they pull their shit together.
EDIT: The Dutch match was not great, and they don’t look that convincing. The Japan v Cameroon match was maybe the worst game of football I’ve seen in a long time. [:(]

Well, the Dutch weren’t amazing… but Denmark were fucking awesome. Only decent thing out of their hold game was this awesome scissor kick save their defender did toward the end of the game.
But really… the had no attack. The Dutch just outskilled them.
And as for that Australia game…
it’s official; football in Australia is fucked for the next 8 years. We just don’t have the talent in the younger ranks to back the ageing frontline

In the interests of a neater World Cup I think they should bring back entries from 32 to 24 for the finals tournament. Twelve from Europe, four from South America, three from Africa, two from CONCACAF, two from Asia and one from Oceania. Mainly because I’m losing too many hours a day on sub-standard football (especially when I’ve a bloody dissertation to do). That would mean 52 instead of 64 matches, the way it was from '82 - '94. I’ve been doing projections on the basis of what’s happened so far; USA actually have a good chance of doing really well if they manage to win their group and avoid Germany in Second Round. It looks destined to be another Argentina v Germany quarter final clash which, although it should be a cracker, would be better if they could meet at a later stage. Portugal should still get out of group G but then they’ll play Spain. I can see Spain getting to at least the semis.
Spain will sodomize Portugal. Sadly.

Talking about going late to work tomorrow, I’m thinking to see NBA finals today, but I’m not sure if I can find a good link to see that. Captain URL would be my favorite hero if he get me one.
Today I really enjoyed Mexico victory against France. First because France didn’t deserve to be in the world cup after that shameful game against Ireland and second because they always win against Portugal. In 2006 Zidane beat us once again in semi finals! Bastard!
