What The Hell Is A U.S American??!!

yep…in 2030 whites will be the minority in the states.

Well there is Latin American which is basically South America. However, in Venezuela, a friend who lived there said, they refer to themselves as American there (they drop the Latin part as they are in Latin America). It depends on context obviously. Even Guevara has spoken of a united Americas (and he wasn’t referring to the US). According to the dictionary as someone posted here, it’s technically true.

Of course, some(black) people from Africa are considered Africans and it is not a country.

I agree. I’ve always had some problem with the term African American. It’s just black. What makes them African - they are more American than many Europeans who came over way later. Besides, has anyone ever heard the term European-American? Even the term Asian American is created out of ignorance here (Asia means not only Orientals but everything else like Russia, Pakistan, Iran, India, Saudi Arabia - this is all Asia).

Similarly, if we use the term African American then we’d clump the Afro-Caribbean in that group too which won’t make them too happy. Is an Egyptian here considered an African American or how about a South African (like Dave Matthews - is he African American?)?

Are Israelis Asian Americans? They should be; Israel is in Asia.

I get all confused and dizzy.

[reply]United States of America is the only country I can think of that has the word “America” in it so I can’t see why anyone else would refer to their citizenship as American. [quote]

actually Mexico’s official name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos which basically translates to “United” Mexican States. I think a few other countries do to.

Here’s an interesting story someone wrote up about all this:

http://www.erik-rasmussen.com/blog/2007/08/30/us-americans/

To quote:

"The ambiguity of the word “american” never really hit me until I was waiting in a Spanish immigration office lobby filled with an assortment of shorter-than-me, darker skinned, obviously from Native American bloodline, Mexicans, Colombians, Argentinians, Cubans, Brazilians, etc. When my number was called and I went up to the desk, the woman said, “Nacionalidad?” I replied, “Americano”, and she said, in a disgruntled government employee tone, “Yeah, so is everyone else around here. What country are you from?”

And someone commented:

I recall stirring some people up when I first arrived in Argentina by making the same mistake. They don’t think it’s very funny for you to say, “in America…” there. Hey, you ARE IN America. It’s just bigger than you thought.

Which is similar to what I heard from the friend who lived in Venezuela.

Hmmm… the United States of Vespuccia.

sounds a little to close to the title of a bad porno movie
