Just heard the new STP song ‘Between the Lines’

It’s crap.

Heard a snippet of that and two live versions: Huckleberry Crumble and Bagman). Not expecting much now. Hopefully there’s a few gems there.

Their whole career is/was crap.

Did you know that the two biggest hit singles off the first album were actually written by Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers) for which he received NO credit??

Gibby was friends with the band before they were famous and quite often jammed with them in their L.A practice space. He played them some songs he had written for his own band which they were impressed with enough to STEAL from him, change slighty and pass off as their own - much to Gibby’s horror. Those two songs turned out to be two of their biggest hits and made the band overnight superstars.

I think Gibby actually left some threatening message on Weiland’s answering machine at some point or so the story goes. I’ve read that Courtney Love has been quoted as telling Weiland to “lay low…Gibby’s after you and he’s mighty pissed and that Texan motherfucker does not fool around”. Or words to that effect.

The new Goldfrapp.

The new Goldfrapp.
how is it?
the last one was ok, but I really adored the first one. had a nice cinema feel to it

The new Trips & Falls album “He Was Such A Quiet Boy”…charming and very strange album.

The lowdown from Songbytoad…

This album will be released on the 22nd March 2010, but you can pre-order it here if you like, and I’ll ship you a copy as soon as I possibly can, which will be an undefined amount of time before the official release, depending on how soon I get my shit in gear.

Jacob from Trips and Falls emailed me this album ages ago, and I absolutely loved it. If it weren’t for this release being on the horizon, it would have been up at the top of my list of albums of the year last year, but in September they agreed to release it on Song, by Toad Records so I have to hold of until my 2010 lists.

This is just a strange album altogether, but it’s full of surprising pop moments. It’s a record with You Should Really Get Yours and Prelude to a Shark Attack back to back – one of the weirdest and one of the prettiest songs on the whole label.

  1. How Do You Do…
  2. We Were Like Strangers Today
  3. And in Real Life He Wears Corduroy Pants
  4. Breaking Up With My Mormon Missionaries
  5. You Should Really Get Yours
  6. Prelude to a Shark Attack
  7. Memoirs of a Martyr
  8. Thanks for Sharing
  9. Damaged Goods

I think every Goldfrapp album’s been a complete departure from every other Goldfrapp album.
This one sounds, not joking here, like early '80s Olivia Newton John or Abba. I love it, but I think a lot of their fans are going to be puzzled at best and disgusted at worst.

I like the new Goldfrapp pretty well, especially Rocket and the last track (which reminds me of Steve Reich). I know I’m in the minority but the last one “Seventh Tree” was actually my favorite album by her and I’m a little let down I don’t love it as much as that. “A&E” isn’t just my favorite Goldfrapp song, it’s probably one of my top 20 songs ever.

How, after being an Eno fan for so long (since I was 12) and especially loving his early glam albums, had I not heard this album until today? It’s criminal! Really great album, I was unsure at first but now I’m more than sure, this album is amazing!
