I saw Ministry live in 1995 and it was just about the best gig I had been to up til that point. Worth seeing for the 10 minute version of Scarecrow if nothing else…
Yeah that’s when I first saw them at Selinas in Coogee Beach, Sydney. Ministry in a fairly small club was fucking superb. What really stood out was how clean and bass heavy the sound was. That is a gig I’ll never forget.
That was one full year before Filth Pig (finally) came out…
Hahaha…I remember my girlfriend at the time and I going to Utopia Records every weekend and asking…“is it out yet??? is it out yet???”…until one fateful day they said…“YES”!!! The other thing I won’t forget is seeing that cover for the first time and taking it home and listening to it for the first time…from the moment it kicked off we were fucking LOVING it. The wait for that album was brutal but well worth it!
Only complaint was that the setlist was very unadventurous - NWO, Just One Fix, Thieves, Stigmata…you know the drill…
My only complaint was that the gig was over so fast! The setlist was awesome as far as we were concerned as it was the first time we had the pleasure of having a Ministry live experience.
Godflesh were great, but I soon lost interest when they beefed up their sound and became more of a ‘metal’ act. ‘Songs Of Love And Hate’ has its moments but the beats are too prominent.
That’s why it’s their best album as far as I’m concerned. Infact it’s easily my favourite heavy guitar oriented album by a country mile. Big warm dubwise beats fused with cold crushing guitars was just what the doctor ordered!
Preferred the more dissonant atonal and distorted ‘StreetCleaner’ where everything is whacked beyond belief and the vocals sound like the tape was trying to chew itself up and spit itself out during the recording process.
That is indeed magic stuff. Like nothing before it OR after it really.
Toot you really like the low end hu? Just out of curiousity do you have a good system in your car? I have a mental image of you in a so-so car that’s just bumping in the subwoofer low end department that you can feel quaking in your feet a mile away… the toes tingle, the birds scatters, squirrels drop their acorns and rise on their back legs and sniff the air? toot’s coming… we feel it…

Toot doesn’t have a car. No need to here in Edinburgh as we have reasonable public transport and the parking is terrible.
I do however have a kick ass system at home.
