Deftones - White Pony. Such a great fucking album. They never hit this level of quality again. The “OK Computer” of the nu-metal movement.
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade. I have a soft spot for emo-ish rock operas (hence my fascination with Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”), and this one hits all the sweet spots.
Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson. Had no idea this even existed, was turned onto it by a friend. Frigging brilliant pop songs.
Kanye West - The Life Of Pablo. I will say nothing in my defense here. I have no legs to stand on. All I can cop to is the weak phrase Stephen King sometimes uses: “I’m no monkey but I know what I like.”

Kanye is a very sick man, and although his lyrics are occasionally quite funny, his delivery is borderline worthless. It’s the production I love. I think he’s a musical genius because of his proficiency with everything in the studio – on par with Reznor or Eno, on that score. But I have to offset that with Kanye The Person, who is a very ill, very despicable man.
In college, a great professor of mine did a unit on Ezra Pound. And he warned us up front that although Pound is considered one of the finest poets of the 20th century, Pound was also a high-ranking creative consultant for the anti-Semitic Nazi propaganda machine. What can you do? Jim Morrison was a drunk. Hemingway beat his wives. Lovecraft was a raging racist. At some point you have to divorce behavior from creative output, if the output is worth it.
That’s all. I’ve said m’piece. I know you were just joking, but I felt like rambling for a bit.

Love Kanye’s production values. He’s a genius. In an era where hip hop all sounds like generic bullshit, his production is head and shoulders above the rest. He’s a little synth nerd as well.
I’ll put it above Reznor, he had a lotta help on those early albums but the later albums when he was doing it all himself they were pretty uninspiring imo.

I don’t know man. I try to steer clear of businesses and people that are less than ethical. Ezra Pound, Hemingway, and Lovecraft would be a no go for me in modern society were they living and producing now. Maybe not back in the times in which they lived because those types of things were, if not socially acceptable, at least kept out of the public eye. I suppose I could justify supporting their craft after they’re dead so that person wouldn’t be able to use the funds to support their other bullshit.
Morrison as a drunk doesn’t bother me. That’s his choice and he’s not hurting anyone else or advocating hurting anyone so, whatever… Kanye is just … dumb. Although that hurricane Katrina outburst with Mike Meyers was hysterical if not right on the money. Meyer’s facial reaction was comedy gold!!
But for me places like Wal Mart and Jimmy Johns are a no go. I know where their practices lie Wal Mart treats their workers like shit and Jimmy Johns hunts endangered animals. Not shit I wanna support. so I don’t frequent their establishments. I’m not out on corners with signs or telling others not to go there but just for me personally I vote with my wallet. Varg is a white supremacist so I don’t even bother with listening to his music.

I don’t think is a case of ends justifying the means, I think it’s about closing your eyes to a person’s negative traits because you like the product they make – admittedly a potentially selfish move, because the person’s “negative traits” may be truly heinous. I did say when I first admitted listening to West (I refuse to call him either Ye or Yeezy) that I didn’t really have legs to stand on.
I only brought up Morrison because I was trying to point out good art / bad lifestyle. But you’re right, his damage is strictly self-inflicted, so the parallelism I was attempting was problematic.
I also don’t support certain businesses (Chick-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby come to mind) due to their lack of ethics… but only if I can get their product in some other form elsewhere. And I confess to making this a high priority. Twenty years ago I wouldn’t get into bed with Amazon.com, in light of their business practices. Now I do it out of convenience. Not the best behavior, but I have to draw a rubicon somewhere.
I don’t know who Varg is.
P.S. GOLD. Kanye’s outburst may not stand the test of time as well as Meyer’s reaction. He did NOT see that coming.
