What are you listening to right now?

Kevin Drumm: Sheer Hellish Miasma

Yep. Also going to have to give the two thumbs up. It’s rare that I bump into anyone, either online or my everyday life, that digs Drumm.

I tip my hat.

I remember being stoked about this band because it marked the return of Paul D’Amour. Only song of theirs that caught my ear was “Safeway” and the few others I heard all sounded the same. Did they get any better?[/reply]

Love Safeway
The album is tops in my opinion
I was thinking how shitty he gets no play (Lusk RULEs)
And ducks out to play bass in Lesser Key(haven’t heard)

Now playing: Ohm-Car Crash

Thank you sir…KD is an amusing character indeed, and knows how to work both extremes of sound saturation and sound deprivation without making it into fatiguing boredom.

He also seems to fit perfectly well into the pattern of Chicago artists who never get appreciated locally until they garner success outside of the city; a truly embarrassing fact of the local culture scene. Big Black once got so pissed at this attitude that they refused to play in their own hometown anymore after they saw how things were developing.

^Good pick Proto! I picked up their album through Subconscious. Good stuff.

I’ve been meaning to check out Fad Gadget. Is this a good one to start with?

Oh yeah, that’s a great record if you like synth-‘pop’ directly before it became a hot topic. Actually all the yellowing issues of NME that I have from that time were still calling it ‘Futurism’ (maybe unaware of the Italian art movement from the 1910’s…)

It actually has pretty bad reviews from serious music critics, but that just makes me like it all the more. Lyrically it’s intensely cynical, but with touches of gallows humor, and has this kind of Iggy Pop sensibility to it. Good use of found percussion, intense nervous synth lines - still holds up very well today.

There’s always the singles collection otherwise, that has ‘Ricky’s Hand’ and other hits on it (as ya know, that one featured in early Ministry setlists.)

Been meaning to get that special edition of Hymns since it came out. Most people tell me the demos are better the actual album.

Most synth pop back then did. Those were the days when rock critics didn’t understand anything that wasn’t firmly blues based.

Yeah, the demo’s are better and the re-issue is worth getting for them…

I think pop music critics throughout my lifetime are just a sorry bunch of people; for the most part they only seem to claim something is ‘revolutionary’ or ‘essential’ once it looks like a movement is already forming around that music - rarely do they stick their necks out before that happens.

It’s especially hilarious watching certain music rags come out in favor of things like Public Image Ltd. or Throbbing Gristle, now that ‘the kids’ are connecting the dots and seeing how those groups preceded music that they now enjoy…the same magazines were calling them ‘novelty acts’ decades earlier.

Mastodon - Once More 'Round The Sun

I’m just listening to that again now, i like it more with every listen. What do you think of it? I know a lot of people don’t like Brent’s Ozzy-style singing, but i think there could be more of it on this one, Troy and Brann seem to do most of it this time. Amazing playing from the whole band, as usual.

Liking it - I’m in the minority among Mastodon fans, but I actually prefer the hookier material on this record and The Hunter.
The cheerleaders were an interesting surprise.

Yeah, i liked that bit too [:)]
