What are you listening to right now?

I saw Swans this year and the wall of sound was brutal. They played at least two new songs but I’m not familiar with the their names.
I recorded parts of the show with decent quality. I’ll share with you later.

Sorry, I’m not familiar enough with their catalog to give you names and if it is old/new. (I stopped reading/memorizing song/album names and their order a long time ago.) I didn’t hear anyone singing along to any lyrics (wink).

I can tell you that the house was nearly 100% packed (venue is about 400 people) and that the sound was big and good. Discs were $12-15 and shirts were $20. There were far too many hipsters drinking PBR in attendance for my taste. However, the 35-55 age group had a pretty nice sized contingent and we hung out closest to the front door. Since I was closest to the main entrance, I also noticed that there was one Godflesh and one TG t-shirt in the crowd, a fantastically dressed goth male/female couple, and several of the filthpig-type layered clothing people (what does she call that style again?).

I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness - Fear Is On Our Side

Nadja - Guilted By The Sun

About to go out and get merry so I thought I’d put on some sludgy doom metal to get in the spirit of things. Have a good weekend, Ps.

[reply]I saw Swans tonight.

Mooney, any thoughts on the setlist? Did they play the new songs, such as ‘Avatar’ or ‘The Apostate’?[/reply]

Last night they played nothing but new songs and songs from “My Father…” with the exception of “I Crawled” and even that was a vastly different arrangement.
It’s Atlanta, but Jarboe did not appear. He dedicated a song to her though, so I assume she was either backstage or in the theater seating area.

I’ve had the worst head/chest cold ever for the past three/four days. I’ve slept a good three-quarters of that.

Shitty industrial is GREAT for decongesting the sinuses.

En Esch - Cheesy
KMFDM - Money
Excessive Force - Conquer Your World
Pigface - Washingmachine Mouth

Good stuff, Rev. I’ve seen some vids of new songs on YT and it seemed like they were still tinkering with how to play them. But it is great the way they play different versions of individual songs. What was ‘I Crawled’ like, compared to the Swans are Dead version with Jarboe?

p.s. Maybe Jarboe didn’t play because she was too busy packing.

I don’t get it? Packing for what?
Anyway, the new “I Crawled” is very different. Much in the style of their newer material.
I was talking to somebody about the show and he pointed out that although what their doing is mindblowing in its way, Swans doesn’t really play any SONGS anymore. I had to agree - they’ve essentially become the world’s scariest jam band.

She’s moving to Colorado.

Scooped up the new Mona Mur & En Esch album. Pretty different, but me likes.

Ritchie Valens. Happens every time I get sucked into watching La Bamba.

According to her fb, Jarboe was in attendance at the Atlanta show and it appears that she would have liked to perform. This would make it look like Gira did not want her to play, presumably as it would alter his “grand plan.” Maybe it would be too nostalgic a move (I remember reading not too long ago that he was very certain in his conviction of not wanting to fall back on old ground anymore). We can only expect an odd song here or there from pre My Father… and played in a near unrecognizable way at that. I respect Gira for that though. Despite his seniority he can still pull some great new music of his and bandmates’ heads. Very unlike most senior rockers. Swans are still way more interesting than most contemporary acts and they’ve been around longer than I’ve been alive.

I don’t think Jarboe would have been able to follow along properly with the new “I Crawled” and I’m sure they didn’t have time to rehearse anything else she was on.

til 3am this morning…

Neurosis & Jarboe - s/t

Driving up to Chicago tomorrow for SWANS!!!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Also hitting the Blane Fonda cd release party on Friday while I’m up there. And free passes to the Chicago Art Institute and the Adler Planetarium! This 4-day weekend is gonna be TITS!

As to what I’m listening to right now, it’s field notes for a Capital Needs Assessment in New Mexico. Thrilling stuff.

Recently, got a new head unit in my car with a front USB port in which I’ve got 8 Gigs of mp3s cycling on random- I really wonder about the algorithms they use in electronics for randomness, because they seem to never really quite be random enough. Out of a whole 8 gigs of material, I’d say about every 7th song that my stereo plays is either a Chip Tha Ripper song, or something off “The Eyes of Stanley Pain”. Whole folders don’t get played, but I hear those songs over and over…

VNV Nation - Automatic
