The record companies will milk Gaga as long as they can.
See, now THAT’S a musical movement I can get behind.

Well it’s kind of pointless to argue with you guys since you’ve already decided to completely typecast this person while apparently knowing little to nothing about her. You’ve decided she is talentless etc. yawn
Actually she does play piano skillfully live, she is a good singer and sings live, not lip-synchs. she comes up with her own concepts and designs, not the label. She writes most of her own stuff.
Lady Gaga was actually hanging around major labels for awhile, waiting to get her break, but was ignored because she wasn’t pretty enough and they didn’t know how to market her.
If you think the labels suddenly had an epiphany and decided to “freakify” a pretty girl to create a new trend you don’t understand major labels. They don’t take chances nowadays. Her bizarre image was a handicap until she found the right people to support her, who saw that it could be marketable.
She is not the Pussycat Dolls who I agree are simply hot chicks who can kind of sing and dance and were sucked into a major label and modeled after some corporate agenda.
I think you’re really not appreciating the extreme amount of work and discipline it takes to be this kind of pop artist.
It’s easy to say "Well anyone can do ____ " without looking deeper and seeing that this person put a lot of work into getting where they are.
You don’t have to like what she says and I’m not saying I listen to her music, but to act as if you can judge/dismiss art without even seeing it or looking more closely at it shows a bias that renders rational/intelligent discussion pointless.
And to reiterate - any idiot with a gym membership card can flaunt a good body on television. There’s no ‘genius’ involved. If I had 5 million bucks to spend on advertising I could turn any number of cutesy teen honeys into megastars.
Wow. Great theory. Then tell me why did Paris Hilton’s attempt at a music career go nowhere? Or Heidi Montag?
Your views on the mainstream are actually as dim, superficial and one dimensional as you assume all of these people to be.
It’s the same as some platinum blonde bimbo hearing Greymachine and saying “oh this is just noise. anyone can scream nonsense into a microphone and bang on shit”
It goes both ways.
Shit is more complicated than that.
Even if one considers Lady Gaga put a lot of hard work in it’s hardly reflected in her music. You can put in hard work all day but at the end of it if your output is shit why should anyone give a shit about it? The hard work argument only works if the artist in question is truly good and has battled against adversity to get where they are, with little support or whatever.
Lady Gaga can tongue my balls.

Well millions of people obviously disagree on her output being shit. That’s your opinion.
Millions of people also believe Eve was made from Adam’s rib.
Wow. Great theory. Then tell me why did Paris Hilton’s attempt at a music career go nowhere?
Good example.
Considering Paris Hilton has made a ‘career’ out of being…good looking and empty. Recording an album was just another vapid bow in her string. In fact I would assume she had no say in it, but her team of advisors and marketing strategists probably thought it was the way to go since Lindsay Lohan had just made one.
Your views on the mainstream are actually as dim, superficial and one dimensional as you assume all of these people to be.
Touche.
Yes I admit I haven’t made a single valid point and have been wasting everybody’s time on purpose.
It’s the same as some platinum blonde bimbo hearing Greymachine and saying “oh this is just noise. anyone can scream nonsense into a microphone and bang on shit”
Yes any ‘idiot’ can bang on shit and that’s the kind of response I would expect from a blonde bimbo. However, the likes of Greymachine don’t “bang on shit” off the backs of giant corporate entities. They didn’t ride the conveyor belt to stardom. They’re not a fad, a gimmick, a pretty face to be tossed around the tabloids nor do they sell Pepsi - a fact which would escape most bimbos. Or yourself even.
Why bother making challenging or provoking art if it won’t make you rich and popular?? Huh!?!? the bimbos will ask!
Try making a ‘quick buck’ off Greymachine and see where it gets you. They weren’t cloned and their music wasn’t cooked up by a bunch of suits at a board meeting and approved by a team of financial analysts.
But if you wantt o buy into that and it puts a smile on your face then so be it.
I’ll let you know when I tire of Greymachine and then we’ll be even! Although it beggars belief why a fan of Wolf Eyes would make an example of Greymachine to prove the credibilty of mainstream pop. But whatever.
i’m the douche i guess cause i got her cds. instead of comparing her to britney and all that, try comparing her to lady miss kier. coming up the the NYC gay/club scene with unique look/style/point of view that’s actually her own. I mean like her or not, at least she is her own leader.
Look I’m not denigrating Lady Gaga per se.
I’ve never even heard a Lady Gaga song!!!
If you like that kind of thing then good on you. You are not a ‘douche’ for liking it or buying into it.
My gripe was more with the insta-celeb press a button and you’re famous thing which seems to be the prevailing trend these days (with Big Brother and American Idol, Australia’s Got Talent, So You Think You Can Dance And Chug A Beer etc etc). I just find it extremely false and superficial.
But yes I will concede that often “there is more to it than that” and a lot of what goes into making a celeb will never be seen by the general public. We only see the outcome and not the path leading to the outcome.
If the public didn’t want/desire/obsess over vapid celebrity then vapid celebrity wouldn’t exist. Simple as that.
i see what you are saying… slow rise to the top helps build a band like pantera, or whomever with a base, gain the practice and chops needed for that world. but gaga is just a personality. granted one that happens to have a little vision and talent. but to lump her and the “pop” artists in with the bands is just a mistake. one is a cult of personality with interchangable parts, and one is a cohesive unit, both working towards creation of a piece of music. but different avenues and in different directions
The record companies will milk Gaga as long as they can.
I think that’s the point that some here are trying to make. People like Gaga and Britney are milked for their tabloid selling power. It has nothing to do with creating art. In the end, people forget why they were famous in the first place and instead get caught up in the soap opera aspect of it all.
That’s what it is really - soap opera. We follow their rise and fall vicariously.
And getting back (finally) to the thread topic: Yeah it was a pretty crappy movie. Every bit as bad as Deep Impact. What’s next in terms of disaster movies? A virus that causes everyone’s computer to run really slowly? A shortage in the world’s coffee supply?
Now that’s a disaster film I’d like to see.

I LIKE Greymachine! You keep missing my point. I was using it as an example because I know you like the album.
A bunch of vapid whores could hear it and say “this is awful. it’s just noise. anyone can do this”
But they’d be wrong. Because those guys are skilled and the sounds they produced are refined, despite being dissonant.
Just like you are wrong assuming Lady Gaga has no talent without even hearing one of her songs or looking deeper.
As for Paris Hilton, you still have yet to concede that she proves your point wrong. She is considered attractive by the mainstream. Many want to see her naked. She had the funds to market a major label album.
Why then did it tank? I thought those were all of the necessary ingredients for pop stardom in our “pathetic, fickle age”? What went wrong?

Ok but we (thank you Porkspam for backing me up) are just trying to get you guys to look deeper and distinguish between corporate-created pop stars like the Pussycat Dolls and people like Lady Gaga who have talent and worked to become what they are. Whose unique vision actually battled against major labels who thought she’d be too weird for the mainstream. Who isn’t a manufactured star but a self-manufacture star.
If she ODs will the tabloids be all over it? Yes. But that’s just a reality for any celebrity or musician selling platinum albums. It doesn’t necessarily reflect on her talent or lack thereof.
Frankly, I like Gaga quite a bit, but there’s also Britney songs I totally dig. I don’t really care about the physical image of the musician that much, but I care about the sounds and whether or not they are pleasing to my ears.
Is it wrong to love Lady Gaga, Steve Reich, Devo, Ministry, LA Riots, Krishna Das, The Misfits, Coil, Lindstrom, Popol Vuh, Bob Marley, Waylon Jennings, Lilly Allen, Goldfrapp, Nurse With Wound, Front 242, The Rolling Stones, Boston, the xx, MIA, Rapoon, Blackroc, Master P, Michael Nyman, Beyonce, Erik Satie, The Freemasons, etc. etc. all at the same time?
Does it matter if the particular brew was created by the artist on the package or the producer (because they are the ones really controlling the sound, not anonymous board rooms, good producers get brought back because they sell records - the business people get that)? I think arguing that image of “art for art’s sake man and damn money makers” is just as image obsessed as only liking x artist because of their look.
Lady Gaga can tongue my balls.
Stop making me want to like Lady Gaga.
All ye guys are blow-ins, I liked Lady Gaga back before everybody knew her.
Lollapalooza '07:

Believe me when I say your ‘point’ was well and truly received.
Just like you are wrong assuming Lady Gaga has no talent without even hearing one of her songs or looking deeper.
Technically never really said she had ‘no talent’ but she does tick all the boxes for ‘celebrity cult’ status.
I like Madonna. Really like Madonna. And she makes pop music and she is a celebrity. ‘Hang on’ I hear you say, ‘Why do you like her then?’. Because she’s the real deal. Not a manufactured puppet. She’s in control. And she’s great. She moves with the times and is very artistically creative and can work with any number of genres and make it her own. She’s not here today gone tomorrow. And her albums (by and large…except for that last one and the American Life album) are ace. I can accept talent when I see it. I get your point. As much as I loathe him and his band, I will even admit that Reznor is talented and I admire what he has done. Wouldn’t listen to it but I can appreciate it.
Now I’m going off on a tangent.

Why did it tank? Who can say. Not enough catchy hooks perhaps. Maybe she doesn’t have the right voice. I don’t know.
Did you know that Emma ‘Baby Spice’ Bunton recorded an album a few years back and it absolutely tanked in the UK? Sold less than 5000 copies. How’s that? Right in her homeland too.
Sometimes the public just gets it right!
