Thread for Comic/Graphic novel geeks

Some of the indie stand alone trades are good… Like Maus, or Blankets.
The problem with me with getting to books like cerebus is that there is just so much material (i think) that it’s almost intimidating to begin.

check what i got Sat. night…

sketch is in a copy of Cages…

In any event Dave has a new book coming out “Glamourpuss” which doesn’t seem to be too flattering of women heh, heh…kinda looking forward to it m’self.

Glamourpuss isn’t good. It’s not offensive at all, really. Pokes a little fun at fashion magazines (not exactly a hard target) and spends a lot of time with Dave talking about tracing/imitating the styles of his favorite artists. I bought the first issue, but I won’t get the second.

As for Cerebus, well there’s not too many things that stay constant for 2/3rds of your life, but I read Cerebus every month for 20 years. Yeah, it’s not the same book at the beginning than it is at the end. That’s going to happen when you take nearly 30 years to tell a story. The storyteller himself changes (see also: The Dark Tower, Star Wars).
I’d say it’s an excellent book up until around issue 200 - that’s when Dave, after one failed relationship to many I guess, decided that women are intellectually inferior to men and that he needed to use a LOT of words to tell us this.

Later, he intended to parody the Bible, so he decided to read the entire thing cover to cover. Well, instead of coming up with a satirical outlook because of this experience, he developed his own religion in which the stuff God does in the Bible that he agrees with are done by the real God, and the stuff God does in the Bible that he doesn’t agree with are actually the deeds of a female wannabe deity called Yahweh. Essentially, he’s developed his own personal denomination of Islam, and it informed the last several years of his work.

Additionally, he developed an over-reliance on in-depth celebrity cameos after his successful use of Oscar Wilde, so that the book turned, at times, into biographical examinations of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Curly from the 3 Stooges, etc.

Ogre’s gonna be at Comic Con in San Diego this Thursday @ 9PM, according to Corey over at Litany.

That’s interesting. Why? I guess he’s a comic fan, judging by the artwork on his solo albums, but what’s the deal with him being a guest?

From Litany:

“Ogre will be appearing at the San Diego Comic Con as part of a panel about his upcoming film, Repo: the Genetic Opera. Also appearing are fellow actors Alexa Vega and Bill Moseley as well as director Darren Bousman. The panel will be on Thursday July 24th at 9pm. No word yet as to whether Ogre will dress as a Stormtrooper.”

I envy that sandman… why is it neil always signs stuff with cats? he did that in my first run angels and viisitations hardcover…

i’ve been waiting for this ogre movie to come out for a while… i’m a sucker for a good musical

Bwah - Ogre’s doin San Diego Comic con?

No diggity? That’s funny.

Anybody here going? Pretty good line-up of guests. Berni Wrightson, Sergio Aragones, Al Jaffee ( Mad-fold in ) James Warren ( publisher of Creepy, Blazing Combat, Eerie ) Paul Gulacy, Jim Starlin, Jim Woodring, Mike Grell, Howard Chaykin…plus all those playmate kockoff sluts…it’s become quite the marketing spectacle. I heard they’re gonna show a preview of Will Ferrel’s Land of The Lost. Ha - any LOL fans here? Fucken Sleestaks used to frighten the shit oudda me. Funny how Chakka resembles Ellen Page from Juno too. Must be the swollen cheeks.

If anybody goes I will be damn curious to hear a full report. Pester the shit oudda Ogre too!

That is a great line up of guests. I would love to go, but its a little short notice, and I usually hit up Dragon Con here in August. I would love to see Sergio Aragones again, he is amazing to watch in action.

I was a big fan of the Land of the Lost as a kid, didn’t know they were doing a movie. The Sleestaks were very creepy with all that hissing.

As for Repo, it should be interesting to say the least, but any film with Bill Moseley and Ogre as brothers can’t be that bad.

Weird…but the movie looks kinda cool (as much as I usually hate musicals). I do like Rocky Horror for what it is, but I digress. I don’t like the fact that Ol’ Cuntface (Paris Hilton) is in it, but I’m sure it’s just a small role, much like every project in her plastic life. If anything, I want to see it because Ogre’s in it, and the story line is interesting. If I’m lucky, Camelview in Scottsdale will show this thing, otherwise I’ll be waiting for the DVD, I suppose.

Choptop is piss yerself funny in TCM 2.

" leatherface yew bitch - YEW BURNT MY FUCKEN SONNY BONO WIG!!!"

The whole lighter on the coat hanger thing scraping the scalp and eating it…jesus I wonder who’s ideer that was?

Madfoul.

I’m very surprised Mosely didn’t get a lot more work after The Devil’s Rejects. It showed he can actually act.

Bill’s a class act, did any of you know that he is in a band called the Cornbugs with Buckethead, where he IS Choptop. Exactly the sort of music you can imagine.

I’ve heard it. But what I’m really interested in is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel/sequel. It was going to be Choptop telling the story of his life from prison. Tobe Hooper’s son was making it, but the project was abandoned.
