The comic store guy takes the books from him and looks at each one. He proclaimed the one at the top of the pile “crap.” and laid it on the counter and did the same for all of them. “crap. crap. crap. crap.” Then he said ok and sold them to my friend for $1.
Maybe he’s obsessed with the 1989 Batman film, that’s what the Joker does when he’s looking at Vicki Vale’s portfolio, hahaha. Genuinely wouldn’t surprise me, lots of comic shop people are absolute dicks and hold the tiny amount of power they have over customers who don’t meet their lofty expectations. They’re the kind of people who, without that job, would have NOTHING in life, so they use that small thing that they have and you don’t to hurt or humiliate you. It sounds like Peligro’s record shop guy falls into that category. People in the collecting/niche selling game are frequently social outcasts and horrible people and possibly have antisocial personality disorder.
besides the fact that hardly anyone cares anymore, and that the prices are so high, there’s a reason why comic book shops are closing everywhere…asshole people in charge. not to mention, digital comics which all the kids love these days. at the school I worked at I don’t think I saw any physical comics besides the ones I gave away. everything was read on their phones/tablets/online
I have had a bookstore cashier make subtle snide comments to me about the book titles I purchased. I just needed something to read on the flight that was not suspense driven. I wasn’t looking for a literary classic.
There’s a record store in Hollywood called Amoeba Records. It is an independent, but MASSIVE (two stories, new and used, movies, music of all kinds, etc.). I’ve always been impressed by the place because even though they are staffed by an army of geeks and various sub-culture hipsters and mutants I’ve never gotten any attitude from anyone. I guess they’re too big for any bullcrap.
So true. I used to go there all the time when I lived in L.A. and I never had a negative experience with anyone who worked there. Everyone was always really pleasant and helpful.
To Olsen . . . that’s kind of funny what you said about the dude warming up to you when there was some perceived common ground on Ministry. MANY of these independent shop dudes are like that. I will sometimes intentionally ingratiate myself to them by sparking a short talk on a particular band or something that I’ll know they will have interest in.
did that at my local comic shop (im not a big comic fan, but i have a few titles i always grab the collected TPBs of when i can) and it worked like a charm. though, he then sold the shop to another guy who was pretty awesome… and then he sold it to these two guys who are also awesome… god fucking damnit, i have been in this town a long time.
Damn. I’ll have to check out that Wax Trax place some time. Sounds awesome, haha!
While reading the reviews I kept thinking of how amusing it would be to just go in and fuck with the guy. Walk up stupidly with the worst, most obnoxious records I can find.

Yeah, I was thinking something along the same lines . . . “Hey, Man! I can’t find the Huey Lewis and the News section . . . can you help a brother out??? Hey, what section would the Titanic soundtrack be filed under?”
"How much is this? Oh, thanks, I’ll be right back [leaves and never returns].
I find it funny that the most elitist anti-social bastard on prongs starts a thread bitching about elitist anti-social bastards.
This has nothing to do with elitism. I made it clear I did not think this tool was an elitist. This is nothing to do with pretending to be someone or something else on a message board. This is a case of some loser in the real world souring the experience of record collecting for me when I have done nothing to him.
This is not a bitch either. I simply what to share my experience with the other prongers to gauge their opinion on the subject and give them a chance to relate their own record/comic book store experiences. Do they think this is more of an isolated experience or do they think there is some credence to the perpetuated stereotyping of record/comic store guys.
And to prove I’m not the anti social bastard you think I am, I will share this pretty picture with all of you here:

I’ve really never had any negative experiences with record or comic store owners - that I can remember, at least.
If I walk up with some music or books or comics that some dick at the register makes snarky comments about I’d likely just laugh it off or ignore it depending on what was said and the vibe of the situation. If the person starts playing 20 questions and tries to belittle me I’d cut it short and tell them to just ring my shit up.
As much as I love music I can’t imagine being a prick to customers over what they’ve purchased. I’d imagine it just becomes like any other retail job and you simply ring up whatever their buying without even really paying attention to what it is. So, anyone who has to voice their negative opinion on what a customer purchases and enjoys has to have their head pretty far up their own ass.
