I remember seeing great outdoors and summer rental as a kid and laughing so hard at it but that was before I would remember fun lines from movies. I should go rewatch. I do however remember in summer rental when a chick takes her top off and asks john candy to touch 'em, and John candy is terrified her husband is gonna walk in and then he does and tells John candy to squeeze em and tell her they look good otherwise she’ll never put em away or something of that sort.
John Candy’s bit part in Splash was great too!!
“Hi guys come on in the water’s fine!!!”
as well as that swedish bit about him having a 12 inch dick cause he learned that line because all the great porn comes from Sweden.
[reply]And, yeah, some of his little personal monologues in “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” were absolutely soul-crushing.
The first time I ever did not like a movie was PT&A. As a kid I felt so sorry for both of them and could not find the humor in any of it. It just made me sad. [:(][/reply]
Try checking out Due Date with Robert Downey Jr and Zack Galifi-whatever. It’s an uncredited rip-off of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, but instead of feeling sorry for them, you’ll despise them. The characters are just so incredibly hateful in that film. Actually, RDJ is so hateful i actually felt slightly sorry for Zach Galifianakis. Rather than making you sad, this one will make you want to kill some Hollywood types. It’s total dogshit, i was furious that i wasted my time watching it.
One bit of John Candy’s illustrious career really chokes me up every time: the part in Planes, Trains and Automobiles when Steve Martin says “so you can go home to your family now” and he says “I uh… i don’t have a family, Neil”, ah poor old John Candy [:(] And one part i always laugh at, even though it’s really minor, in The Blue Brothers when they’re at the arena watching the band play and he goes “alright, who wants an Orange Whip? Orange Whip? Orange Whip? 3 Orange Whips.”
Both of those lines (and movies) get me every time. Planes…the one part where he’s having a conversation with his departed wife freezing his ass of in the snow gets me teary.

Yeah but I laughed my ass off when the dog started beating off in the back of the car…
Planes always gets me on an emotional level and it showed the range that Candy had…

I don’t remember that bit offhand, but did Robert Downey Jr spit in the dog’s face at some point? I chuckled at a couple of scenes, but overall it was one of those rare films where i was furious with myself for wasting my time, and furious with the makers for churning out such a misanthropic piece of shit.
It would have been great to see John Candy do some more serious roles, i think he’d have been fantastic. There’s a few bits and pieces through his comedy films where a little sadness unexpectedly breaks through for a moment. Great actor, i can’t remember not knowing who he was, even though we didn’t have any of his tv stuff here. My dad liked his stuff, so i always got to see them on video. Stripes was an early one i really liked, Blues Brothers, Splash, Armed and Dangerous, his little bit in Vacation. Such a genuinely funny man.
Yeah, “Planes” (and some of the parts in “Uncle Buck” and other films too) do a good job of holding up a mirror and showing me what an asshole I am. Because as much as I might identify with Candy in his films, I’m also finding myself in the shoes of the guys that are mistreating him and think he’s a giant annoying dick. Candy always brought out the best in those actors/actresses he played against. And, even though the films were mostly “comedies”, it’s that humanity and his ability to really make us re-evaluate what we see inside ourselves and in other people that made him stand out far ahead of the usual goofballs.
