Potentially indeed.
Another potential:
I’ve always considered that album to be way below par. A couple of decent tracks but they seems way out of their depth here. It’s just not…Godflesh enough for me. It’s like an album with elements of the Godflesh sound made by a different (and vastly inferior) band. Very clumsy - especially lyrically - at times.
At the moment, my top ten is something like this…

En Esch: “Cheesy”
Ministry: “Dark Side of the Spoon”
Type O Negative: “Slow, Deep & Hard”
Godflesh: “Selfless”
Halo: “Body of Light”
Leaether Strip: “Penetrate the Satanic Citizen/Fit for Flogging”*
Pigface: “Washingmachine Mouth”
Paradise Lost: “Shades of God”
Click Click: “Shadowblack”
Skinny Puppy: “Bites”
(*I damn well can’t choose between these two. Pretty much everything Claus Larsen from '89 to '92 is gold.)
I’d also have to add these as contenders:

plus Filth Pig and Downward Spiral

That felt good.
amlux, i have been the greatest james brown fan, but taken as a whole, the records/albums don’t stand up. i could and will say the same about led zeppelin.
SO?
still love both and more importantly, life goes on.
i didn’t notice anyone here mentioning led zep. the music does not have the same soul mark as say, trex. bowie. etc.
i’d sooner wake up in the morning to marc bolan goin’ on about the dirty sweet, than robert plant goin’ on with, “hey lady, you got the love i need…”
hmm. just me.
i remain, especiale eduardo.
Chemlab - Burnout At The Hydrogen Bar
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced
Cubanate - Interference
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Front Line Assembly - TNI/Hardwired (I love them both)
Killing Joke - Night Time
Chrome - Anthology
ed- couldn’t agree more about bolan. dude was always on top of his game, even during his “down” period before Dandy in the Underworld (given one more album he would have been back on top, I say. tragic but true)
Devin Townsend: Ocean Machine
I have far too many to pick a greatest. It changes weekly.

I was just about to post this:

I realise it’s cliche, but damn if that isn’t the most incredible rock album ever.
I disagree with what you say about Zeppelin albums not standing up as a whole. In fact, the reverse is more accurate. Rarely do you find bands who so consistently put out albums that floor you from beginning to end. Even ‘In Through The Out Door’ can hold its own with the best of the best.
My favourite albums of all time (in some sort of an order) would be…
Brian Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin (IV)
David Bowie - Low
Brian Eno - On Land
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol II
Throbbing Gristle - DOA: The Third And Final Report Of…
Faust - The Faust Tapes
Godflesh - Pure
Sonic Youth - Sister
Dinosaur Jr - You’re Living All Over Me
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
Tool - Lateralus
The Orb - Orb’s Adventures Beyond The UltraWorld
Swans - Various Failures
Melvins - Bullhead
Nurse With Wound - Soliloquy For Lilith
Can - Ege Bamyasi
The Boredoms - Pop Tatari
Black Flag - Damaged
Metallica - And Justice For All
Chrome - Half Machine Lip Moves / Alien Soundtracks
Earth - Earth 2
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
King Crimson - Lark’s Tongues In Aspic
Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes
Ulver - Shadows Of The Sun
Pink Floyd - A Saucerful Of Secrets
The Slits - Cut
The Doors - Strange Days
Coil - Musick To Play In The Dark 2
Amon Duul II - Phallus Dei
Mr Bungle - Disco Volante
Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love
Jesu - Heartache
Sunn O))) - White 2
Jim O’Rourke - Disengaged
Royal Trux - Twin Infinitives
The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday
Nirvana - Bleach
Killing Joke - Killing Joke
Godflesh - StreetCleaner
Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground And Nico
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
The Smiths - Meat Is Murder
Einsturzende Neubauten - Strategies Against Architecture
Dinosaur Jr - Bug
Cocteau Twins - Heaven Or Las Vegas
David Bowie - Station To Station
Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician
Melvins - Lysol
Incredible String Band - The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter
John Zorn - IAO: Musick In Sacred Light
i’m not one to really put down another’s tastes, but as far as ZEP goes, maybe it’s cause i’m in the 20-30 age group, but I hear them and all i can think of is a fucking car commercial
eno informs everything i care about.i am not a musician.music for airports was some way to keep me sane.
eno has that soul. haha a white boy.
who coulda knew that soul isn’t about the color of your skin.
i’m a fan only of what is pop and not a fan of what is shit.
i like beck for godsakes. most don’t but he’s accomplished the pop hero thing. good in my book. and as i’ve said previously, i hate the current beck. i have the ear to say yea, or nay.
my ear does not lie.
ask anyone.
for some stupid reason, i can call em.
i can hear the good the bad and the ugly, and feel good about my tour of duty.
once again, i am not a musician. but i can call a good band or a crap band. it’s my ear.
(i’m wiping the brow–a slight james brown move)
the best albums i’ve heard in the past ten are minimal.
eno always informs. albums are a fun bunch which mostly dont hit the mark.
as much as some here hate to hear it, there are few who can accomplish an albums worth of music.
try it.
and head your way to singles that sell.
i shall remain, especiale ed.

Um…yeah.
Anyway, I can remember when I was 16 years old and thought that no musician would ever achieve to express themselves more perfectly than this:

Twenty years later it just makes me giggle like the proverbial schoolgirl.
I am surprised how stark the production on DANZIG I sounds to me now twenty years later. As I was a Misfits and Samhain fan before Danzig the band came around it is my overall least favorite of his projects, and yet this album is probably the best he has ever done. Whatever you may think about Glenn as a person you cannot deny the impact of this album.
Chuck Biscuits is a superb drummer he’s been in so many bands, and its a shame that he has all but given up music.

Really? Why? Is he focusing on his art more? I know he was in circle jerks but what else besides danzig was he in?
BTW for my money it doesn’t get any better than Danzig II followed closely by Danzig III. With Danzig IV a distant third.

Chuck pretty much dropped out of the music business after leaving Social Distortion in 1999. He was a drummer for both DOA and Subhumans two of Canada’s premier early punk bands. He was briefly drummer for Black Flag, Fear, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Weirdos and a lot of others. His brother ‘Dimwit’ passing away in 1994 from a drug overdose may have had something to do with him ultimately leaving the business, but who knows. Like you pointed out he is also a pretty accomplished artist.
I agree with you on Danzig II, it just happens to have my favorite Danzig songs on it Snakes of Christ, Her Black Wings, and Blood And Tears.
