Skinny Puppy - Weapon

i’m such a twat. i STILL haven’t grabbed this yet. i’m always happy to support skinny puppy.

I am with everyone else on this one. When I listen to the album, I know I SHOULD like it. It seems to have a lot of the classic puppy elements that I’ve always liked. But I don’t find myself actually listening to the album when I put it on. Nothing really grabs me or attracts my attention. At least on 2 of the 3 reunion albums (Handover being the exception) I find elements are appealing.
I can’t say I don’t like the album, but something seems to be missing. Repeated listens might be what is needed.

Not everyone else is saying that…

Because if they were you’d be saying it too.

Yeah, I don’t think that’s quite fair. Say what you want about how Voidie behaves or portrays himself, but he isn’t afraid to be contrary to the overwhelming majority opinion. And he is absolutely right on more things than people want to give him credit for, often when the whole rest of the board has it wrong. For instance, he’s quite possibly the most sex positive person on here. His tastes might be out of the norm but his attitudes on the topic are a lot healthier than some of the caveman mentality that gets hurled around here. Not that I am going to bitch about anybody in particular, but it induces eye rolls from me probably at least once a day while I am on here. Granted, if you take anything on this board too seriously you are missing the point.

Gay…

Predictable.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, even I give Void shit sometimes- he does tend to invite it, presumably at least sometimes intentionally. But I just don’t find him as easy to dismiss out of hand as you guys do. Dude puts a lot more thought into things than anybody gives him credit for. So go ahead and call him a fag. Call me a fag. Whatever gets your rocks off, champ. I ain’t got no beef. It’s just tired.

Take a deep breath and please refer to the last sentence of the post before your most recent…

I was actually making a play on the whole “caveman” thing…guess it didn’t translate…bro,in all honesty I couldn’t give a shit what you think about Void or anyone else on the board…I’m not saying that in a dickish way…I come here to have fun and talk some music/pop culture…I don’t think of anyone on the board outside of the time I am on it…I’m a 42 year old man with many responsibilities just like the rest of the board…it sounds like you are the one who might be taking things on the board a bit to seriously…

I’ve never met any of you so I make no judgements about who you are as people…it’s jokes and ball-busting as far as I’m concerned…do I like some people’s online persona more than others? Of course…would I sit and have a beer or 20 with any of you? You’re goddamn right I would…

Bro, we’re all good. I figured it was dick… er, TONGUE in cheek. Just pointing out shit has been over the top lately, since I don’t see anybody else mentioning it. Granted that’s most of the reason I come here, to watch a bunch of people with mostly good taste in music act like jackholes and compete who can say the dumbest things possible in the most intelligent-sounding ways possible. But my wife wears my balls in a little locket next to her heart now, and she wouldn’t put up with me talking shit like that. And when you have to stop acting like a ignorant goofus on the day to day, you start to look at your friends and wonder why you ever thought being casually dickish to a third party group that has nothing to do with anything was a good thing to do. You motherfuckers would be just as funny if you toned it down a notch. Faggots.

Also, I still need to check out this record. They lost me with Mythmaker, which listening to I KNEW it had all the elements I was supposed to like, but somehow I couldn’t click with it. Haven’t really dipped back in to their new stuff much since. That live show DVD they released for free last year was excellent though, so I have high hopes for this one.

And seriously, queer bait, that is not aimed at you or anybody in particular, just a thought for the gestalt.

Chapter IV:
[center]How to Take the Internet Too Seriously
[center]or
[center]That’s Gay, Faggot

Okay, that one did make me laugh. Well played.

It’s clear that newer SP is utilizing softsynths in places, but I’m sure Cevin is still incorporating the classic gear. I think what’s missing is all of the sampling that I believe Dwayne was doing. They were sampling and over-processing all sorts of noises back in the '80s, and using lots of Hellraiser/ Twilight Zone/Legend soundbytes that peppered a lot of the tracks on those albums. I think they even used a Pepsi commercial (“We got the taste”) on Assimilate. So a lot of the missing ‘noise’ could be attributed to the lack of sampling on the newer material.

I was a big proponent of the hard-hitting, processed 8-bit drum samples from that era, so one of my small gripes with the newer stuff is how lightweight the drum tracks sound, and they shouldn’t use 909s on almost every song. That said, I do like Weapon a lot. I get the complaints, but I’m probably more of a nostalgic SP fan, so hearing a Solvent redux (still prefer the original, one of their best early tracks) and songs such as “Salvo” and “Plasticage” takes me back to the Bites and Remission era. I think it’s ok for them to bring back some of the past, because it’s still a progressive album.

I read a recent interview with Ogre where he talks about rediscovering his ‘old voice’, which was apparently a self-conscious style for him (he felt the original Solvent vox could have been better). He said he sort of ‘hid’ behind all those vocal FX, and that it was a relief for him to finally record a clean, less-processed, more melodic voice on newer SP. I definitely hear more of his old style on a lot of the songs. The ‘angry bark’ isn’t quite there (a la Addiction, Dogshit, God’s Gift Maggot, et al), but I do like his vocals more on Weapon than the past three albums.

I do recommend repeated listens of Weapon, and the popular favorites seem to be “Tsudanama”, “Survivalisto”, and “Illisit”. I’ve accepted that I’m not gonna hear 1988 Puppy any more, as much as I want to hear that abrasive in-your-face sound again. I’m happy with the new LP (and really dig SRG’s design and the ViviSectVI throwback sans serif text).
