RGB

Peligro I agree with you on the mind and filth pig having that quality open air sound your talking about. The mind and filth pig are just downright evil albums that I love. Useless should have been dropped on filth pig without a shadow of a doubt. RGB I still have to pickup.

Whats wrong with useless?

yea! useless is great. the moment when song enters small bridge and then it hits that super dissonant bass note is awesome. too bad it happens only once in the song. :frowning:

just thought i’d comment, since i feel a little differently to everyone else.

houses and animositisomina were two very similar sounding albums that lacked hooks and decent songs. [;)]

I safely say that ‘Animositisomina’ and ‘Houses…’ are not very similar at all. In fact they are completely and utterly different in nearly every way. Different riffs, tempo, direction etc. ‘Animositisomina’ did contain some “hooks”; ‘Animosity’, ‘Broken’, ‘Light Pour Out of Me’ to name the best examples. ‘Houses’ probably did contain some “hooks” aswell but I dont really care. I think one of the reasons why ‘Houses’ went down poorly among some people was because it was such a markedly different album than ‘Animositisomina’ and the usual Ministry stuff (not that a band should churn out the same stuff over and over again but saying that ‘Houses’ is a piss poor generic metal album), for me the deathknell was Barker’s departure.

Just ‘my two cents’.

man, i thought animositisomina rocked… i prefer it to houses. houses was over the top, and so forcful that it didn’t quite have the impact… it was amazing the first few listens but even when i first listenend to it, i knew i was going to be listening to it too often afterwards… animositisomina still kicks my ass, and RGB has a much better atmophere to it…

i can’t really articulate it but, it makes me angry and happy at the same time.

Actually I thought RGB was generally the worst written Ministry album since DSOTS. The title track, Great Satan and Yellow Cake are standouts, and there’s a few other decent tracks, but on a whole I thought it was rather… meh.

Houses has a sort of glossy production to it. Seems as if Al tried to hard to make a Ministry-yet-accessible album, with mixed results. It never was the Pslam 69 it wanted to be.

I consider Animositominia their 3rd best album. Al seemed a bit recharged when making that Album.

I didn’t know really what to think about RGB the first few listens. I actually hated ‘Gangreen’ and ‘Yellow Cake’, and didn’t really care about ‘Señor peligro’, ‘Lies lies lies’ or ‘Palestina’…

But the damn thing did grow on me and I think it’s a lot more consistant than what I thought first.

Curiously, while the album looks at first really straight forward and simplistic, every new listen reveals something new and interesting. Even ‘Gangreen’ sounds a lot less annoying now.

Finally I like it a lot. And it’s not my final opinion, I might like it even more…

After I discovered Ministry 18 years ago, the band still releases stuff that interest me… Not bad.

I have given RGB a few more run throughs and I must say its not a bad album certainly not the turkey I was expecting. It has some major weak points but it has some gems too. Rating;

‘Rio Grande Blood’: 7 (good introduction, some interesting sound bits, well made.)
‘Senor Peligro’: 6 (solid but a little too generic, like the way it starts good and heavy, crap lyrics again)
‘Gangreen’: 5 (song made me laugh hard; “im gonna sell you to queers”. Passable metal song.)
‘Fear’: 7 (one of the highlights, gets nice and ferocious after a while)
‘Lieslieslies’: 3.5 (this song is just a composite of ‘Waiting’ and ‘Wrong’ from ‘Houses…’, in other words CRAP)
‘Great Satan’: 7 (good Ministry song, great fun altogether)
‘Yellow Cake’: 6 (passable if not mediocre metal song)
‘Palestina’: 6.5 (good bass driven punk song but nothing special)
‘Ass Clown’: 8 (one of the best.) [listen out for the little Prong lick/squeal in the chorus]
‘Khyber Pass’: 7 (another good song and one that stands out on the album.

It seems the songs that Victor had most influence on are the weakest. I always found Prongs music enjoyable esp. ‘Rude Awakening’ so its a bit unfortunate. While Al has finished on another “I dont like Bush” rant he finished the album in style; ‘Ass Clown’ and ‘Khyber Pass’ are good songs that should be celebratred, so fair play to him. Listening to this album I would like to see Ministry again one last time

‘Fear’: 2.5 (god awful song. Starts good but needed to go somewhere within 30 secs which it doesnt and contains one of the most annoying riffs ive ever heard)
‘Lieslieslies’: 4 (this song is just a composite of ‘Waiting’ and ‘Wrong’ from ‘Houses…’, in other words CRAP)

???..

‘Fear’ is really the song I like the most on the record so far. Great slow intro, great break and great fast riff.
I can’t stop listen to it!

‘Lieslieslies’ sounds a lot more like ‘NWO’ to me than anything from ‘Houses’. Didn’t care too much first, but finally it’s one of the songs that sound better and better each time I listen to it. Very well done guitar hook…
Not groundbreaking but efficient.

I have to admit, of the “terrible trio” of Ministry albums (ie everything since DSOTS) RGB is definitely the best. Some of the lyrics are impossibly corny/childish/contrived sounding but the songs themselves are fast & hard hitting and the percussion is up to par. It’s definitely more industrial than the past two albums-I agree on the Prong influence in some of the songs.

A shame Al couldn’t persuade/afford R. Lee Ermey to do Gang Green tho!

I’d give RGB a solid 7 or 7.5…with a 6 for Anim. and a 5 or 6 to Houses. I may be the only person who prefers Filth Pig & DSOTS over everything released by Al after 1999.

It’s probably a nasty thing to say but I personally cannot stand anything released after Filth Pig. The production on all of the following albums sounds so tinny and the lyrics so forced and lazy. Especially Houses, which often sounds like it was recorded on an 8 track tape recorder in Al’s basement.

Having said that though, I gotta admit that RGB is probably the best of a bad bunch. If it weren’t for the endless bush samples and bush bashing it would have been half decent. And I really disagree with the guy who raved about Khyber Pass. The song goes absolutely nowhere fast - a shame considering it really did have the potential to be an epic.

I also prefer FP and DSOTS over the post 99 stuff simply because I’m not a fan of metal or speedy stuff

i consider the "second ( aka “ugly” ) trio to be FP, DSOTS and ANIM. they are all great, i didn’t like them at the very instant (like MIND or PSALM) but they grew on me and now i really dig them. the “modern trio” which i consider to be HOTM, RANT, RGB is kida “meh”.

Yeah to me filth pig and dark side are not speed metal records also and very unique. But, my jaw did drop when I first heard filth pig thinking is this the same band that made psalm 69? I love filth pig but I would change a few songs on it beause I think a few are very boring and go absolutely nowhere. Dark side is awesome to me love the sound on it and the jazz influence on it. Animositisomina I like it but the drumming sounds weak as hell on it. Treble is so annoying at times on ani. Houses didn’t know what to expect like it better than ani, Scaccia back on guitar for houses was a smart move by Al. Don’t have rgb yet, heard a lot of mixed reviews on it.

as for filth pig, i would probably cut a few songs by a minute or two, also i like the 12" version of reload more than the original (except that the uberlooped ending of 12" version sucked) and shame paisley isn’t on filth pig.

as for dark side, only complaints that it’s so short. yes, it’s ~46 minutes, the perfect lenght for album for me, but it just sort of “feels” short. i’d change supermanic soul to the version with samples and throw in extended versions of step and nursing home. the fuck-around in the end of the extended version of step with bass and saxophone craziness is superb. wonder why they cut it. also, the “hidden” track on dark side is totally pointless. and as much as i dig 10/10, it ends sort of too unexpectedly and could be a minute longer or so. other than that, dark side is their weirdest album since the land of rape. shame there’s no place to stick in “happy dust” which is a great tune too but feels out of place on that album.

i agree on the hi freq abuse on animositisomina but i’ve seen people who like that. i think it was deadguy here. while this annoyance actually can be dealth with, the drums are still weak, i agree. that’s very apparent in unsung. on the other hand, guitar sound is pretty unique, which is a plus. but check out the insane amount of clipping in piss. that’s just wrong!!

My thoughts exactly. Ministry is defintely still a good band and I will continue to buy their records, but Animositisomina was the end of a great band.

People who fail to recognize Filth Pig, Dark Side of the Spoon or Animositisomina are usually just metal heads looking for a quick fix without any kind of thinking involved. These people are the same ones who like Land of Rape and Honey but skip the instrumentals and love Psalm 69 but don’t listen to “Corrosion” or “Grace”. Fuck them.

Metalheads don’t like Filthpig? Wuh?

I liked Filth Pig the first time I heard it, when it was called Streetcleaner.

I liked it when it was called ‘Houdini’.
