What the…!!!
[shocked]
The Oscars were fairly boring as expected but the hosts I thought were alright. .
You thought Hathaway and Franco were…alright?!
[shocked]
All of a sudden your gushing appraisal of Reznor begins to make sense.[/reply]
And some accuse me of being a heavy handed asshole with my opinion…
Late,
grmpysmrf
Grmpy, I would liken you at times to a young scamp of a thing who, upon waking to a newly fallen snow, naievely and somewhat foolhardily believes it to be Christmas morn…only to fully awake in a panic and discover it is merely January 14th and Christmas is yet still 11 months away.

Trent’s a self made man. He can make one of the finest industrial (hell, ROCK) albums of all time and go on to win an Oscar for his first full attempt at scoring a film. He’s a smart dude who’s given us some great music through the years.[reply]
I’m with you Mick. I would have Trent’s babies.
[reply]The Oscars were fairly boring as expected but the hosts I thought were alright. Better than some right wing asshole who keeps laughing at his own jokes and then lives to 100.
I’m not with you Mick. I didn’t see all the ceremony but the hosts seemed nervous and were as entertaining as last Ministry output. At least to me.
Rick Gervais would have done a better job.
And I’m pretty sure the old man on stage was pretty dead.
And he accepted everything that was laid before him. Willingly.
I put it to him. I said "Trent. Trenty ol’ boy. The gig is up. You’ve been found out. You are the godfather of emo and your lyrics sound like they were written by the shy 15 year kid in the Korn shirt who lives next door to me. It’s just embarrassing, I said.
[i]Stop it, ok? Stop it before you do some real damage. It’s just shit. Shit!! Ok?
Industrial music these days sucks and this Oscar isn’t going to change it.
Peligro’s opening post was almost as emo as nin.
This. You have Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Depeche Mode and Front 242. With the exception of a few here and there, most industrial bands try too hard to sound like these legends, and fail miserably. Not enough diversity in the genre if you ask me. I give Trent major props for using several influences and making his own thing, just as the bands mentioned above did.
I’m not sure if I can put Nine Inch Nails in the emo category. I would probably compare NIN to The Cure or Depeche Mode in vocal content, but certainly not with emo music now a days, with cry babies wailing on mediocre guitar playing.
Paligro’s rant was pretty emo, if you ask me. He sounds like a person who got pissed off in the early 90s that Pretty Hate Machine and Broken were (in opinion) second rate Ministry albums that sold way more than any Ministry record. So boo hoo! That’s how I feel about Static X and Rob Zombie, but I’m not going to cry a river and rain on the parade of those who respect these bands.
Trent is one my all time favorite artists, and I give him props for the award! His soundtrack is very good. Better than the movie, if you ask me. The movie itself falls into the expected Oscar category: The movie you ever watch once and say “That was pretty good” but would probably never watch it again.
My definition of emo is literally crying while singing. Sure, Trent bitches, but so does Al and everyone else in the “industrial” and metal genres. I would hardly call it emo though. Blue October, Death Cab for Cutie, Fall Out Boy, that’s what I’m referring to. BIG difference.
Depeche Mode was the first “pop” group of industrial. Perhaps the first rock band to use all synthesizers and drum machines and no acoustic instruments. So yes, they instrumentally formed the pop aspects of the genre, taking lessons from Kraftwerk and Throbbing gristle.
My point is, if you look at industrial groups today, they are trying to be either Skinny Puppy, Depeche Mode or Ministry. Those are the three areas: The creepy horror movie sound, the pop electronic sound with depressing lyrics and the in your face dance metal sound. Very few bands break out of those three trends, that’s why I have a lot of respect for Trent. He makes the music he wants to make and doesn’t feel he has to conform to any particular style. Al was cool like that in his early years.
I’d say the soundtrack to the Soical Network is closer to the Vangelis score for Chariots of Fire or something than an “industrial” album. It was good to see Trent move out of the usual nin comfort zone, imo. But I suppose even instrumental tracks can still be emo pish so who iz I to judge?
Blade Runner has been getting a heavy amount of drainage these days, everyone seems to be taking influence now. as if the last 20 years went by and we all finally smacked ourselves and realized. “oohhhh fuuuuture. riiight…” i have faith that the artwork related to that film (syd mead / vangelis etc) can sustain such a rip of creativity. (rip off)
but also, i really like the city by Vangelis. It kind of goes back into that world to finish the job. It’s all designed to be creatively stimulating and ultimately ignorable. (aka movie music)
Thats the problem with most people who actually SAY they’re going to DO something. They usually create a simplistic lesser layered lesser complicated version of the design they are _ emulating.
Some people know how to draw influence and walk away - some people have to listen to it over and over while creating their own to use as reference. I have no clue which method works for what purposes or which ones are hailed to be LAW or “GOOD”, but whatever…
it’s music theory remember? There are no laws to govern the nature of our music and… maybe there should be. or wait… are there already powers in place enforcing their laws in order to govern music? I’m pretty sure they are those ultimately ignorable people called musicians.
this is also partially a response to: realmdemagic as well. about all these new bands: what fucking new bands?
