mccain picks sarah palin

Sarah Palin, huh? Didn’t see that one coming. I would have called Pawlenty (in fact I did among a few friends).

As for abortion, I did get my gf pregnant just out of h/s. She had the baby and we gave her up for adoption. Host family footed the medical bills but it was hard as hell.

Its ironic to me that the people that are radically pro-life are also the first in line to support the death penalty, or the taking of another’s life if they don’t fall in line with their idealogies.

Yeah they are usually anti seat belt law people too!! As well as pro NRA!

okay okay. my mother had an illegal abortion in the 60’s. she woulda died if she didn’t. the issue is near and dear, rip for the old girl. she passed away in her early sixties.
the wimmins be havin’ my time.

Any woman who believes that creationism should be taught in school should not be considered for a position such as this.

i just re-read this and i said palin was pro-choice–she’s not. she opposes abortion. sorry for the misstep.
you are correct afra.
creationism–wtf is that? i defy any dumbass republican to tell me what’s in their medicine cabinet for the heart, diabetes, cancer , VIAGRA ANYONE? you want to ignore science? empty the medicine chest, dumbasses.
a reporter asked mccain several weeks ago what his position was on insurance companies still not paying for female contraception, and yet they’ll pay for viagra in the blink of an eye.mccain did the ‘humina humina," deer in headlights routine.
sorry, i got no time for that old clueless guy, who married the girlfriend twenty years his junior whilst the wife #1 was illin’.

carmangary, you be comin’ outta the darkside. amen.
i agree, there’s no reason for this nominee other than tokenism.
i would’ve voted for hillary if i thought she was the one to set the country straight.
but she woulda set us back because of the political baggage.(thanks bill) she was qualified. maybe she’ll have a role in the (fingers crossed) new presidency.
no reason to put up a woman , a black man, ANYBODY if they don’t have the stuff. and i know some of you have complained about biden, but c’mon. he’s been around the block. he’s a bulldog. obama’s green. he needs this guy.
(when are these idiots going to hire me?)

I agree Ed, Biden is exactly what Obama needed to balance out the inexperience issues, someone who has been in these circles for over two decades. Now Mccain has seemingly done the same thing just in reverse picking someone who looks flashy (all the VPILF jokes are already stale [:(]), and has relatively little experience much like many perceive Obama. Until now I thought Mccain had little chance of success, but seriously there are enough dead above the neck voters out there he might just win. Either way it will be a historic election I just hope not one that will come back and bite us in the ass like the last two.

Seconded. [cool]

you know what? i go to the grocery store almost every day. there’s a black lady there, who’s a cashier and i asked her today if she saw the wonderboy’s speech and she said,"hell yeah. i fell asleep until the time, and i felt a tiny tap on my shoulder, and nobody was there–but obama’s speech was starting,so i woke up… i couldn’t see nobody was tappin’ my shoulder and i was WIDE awake for the speech.guess she had a vision.

I’m alternating between being happy about the pick (because McCain just threw out his trump card) and being worried because this woman seems tailor made to win over the vote of people who don’t know anything about the issues their candidates stand for.

It’s so obvious what they’re going for, and their defense will be “she has as much/more experience than Obama”, conveniently omitting that Obama was a state senator for eight years and headed the Harvard law review (along with being a professor of constitutional law), while this chick has a bachelor’s in journalism from Idaho university and was mayor of god-fucking-knows-where Alaska. ugh.

vote vote vote. the old black lady at the grocery store is a staunch church goer.i am not. i told her to get her peers together and make sure every one of them votes. this shit is serious.
saw the front pages today with mccain and his highly qualified fingerpuppet. ecch.
(she actually looks like tina fey–somebody else i think is overrated)

something i got in the eashmail today:
Sarah Palin from someone who knows her

Rev. Gene Straatmeyer served as pastor of First Presbyterian churches in Fairbanks and in Wasilli, Alaska the town where Sarah Palin served on the city council and later as mayor from 1992 to 2002. Straatmeyer spent many years as pastor in Alaska. He is now retired and living in Chrystal Beach, near Galveston.

So do you know anyone who knows the Governor of Alaska? Did you know her name before today? Is she ready to be President?

The following is a report from someone who does know her. He is a retired minister. So, perhaps he has a good prospective on her ability to govern. Many wonder about her ability. So read the following:

From Rev. Gene Straatmeyer who spent many years in Alaska:

"To those who want to know my feelings on Sarah Palin:

I have been getting a number of emails asking me if I know Sarah Palin and what I think about her so I’ll write one opinion and send it to all.

I know her quite well. When she was on the city council in Wasilla I had a major run in with her over bar closing times. I was testifying on behalf of the Alaska Christian Conference and the Valley Christian Conference. I was president of both. There was a push to close the bars at 2 am instead of 5 am. She responded to my testimony that she didn’t see any relationship between her Christian faith and the time the bars closed. She said she was a Sunday School teacher at the Assembly of God Church. In essence, she felt it was out of line for me to testify on behalf of the church groups I represented. She had not yet integrated her faith - there was the sacred and the secular and one should not mess with the other. She won. I lost. Wasilla also lost - because when Anchorage bars were closing at 2 am, their drunks were driving to Wasilla (40 miles) and then going home about the time Wasilla workers were headed to Anchorage. After Anchorage started closing its bars at 2 am, there was a significant traffic accident spike of these drunks driving back and forth. to drink in Wasilla until 5 am.

Wasilla also lost since the police chief said 5 am bar closings had always caused a lot of domestic violence when drunken parents came home just as the family was getting up to go to school and work. That night Sarah supported the bar owners, not those who believed a 2 am closing would cut back on traffic accidents which caused injuries, deaths and damage. She voted in favor of the bar owners and didn’t understand or care that closing them earlier could avoid early morning abuse of spouses and kids. So I lost a lot of respect for her then that still lingers.

My problem with her now is that she has been a city council person of a city of 5000 plus its mayor. She went from there to governor and she has been governor for less than two years. I shudder to think what would happen if McCain was elected and dropped dead after a month in office. One has to keep that in mind with McCain because of his age. And, Wasilla is not like just any other city in the US, and Alaska is not like just any of the other states in the Lower 48. If she was VP for four years she might grow into a broader understanding of what this nation is really like - and if she found out, she might want to pack up and head back for Alaska.

She has grown since my encounter with her and she has pushed for reform in Alaska politics where the whole Republican Party seems to have been tainted with corruption. For that I applaud her. She ought to have rejected the request to be VP knowing she was too inexperienced - far less experienced in dealing with the whole country than Obama - and kept up her good work of cleaning up Alaskan Republican politics.

She is a conservative so that wing of the Republican Party will love her.

She is a graduate of Wasilla High School, was runner up in the 1984 Miss Alaska contest and has a B.A. in journalism from the University of Idaho in Moscow. She is married to Todd Palin, an Alaskan Native. They have five kids, have been married 20 years, the last child just born has Down’s Syndrome and Todd has worked on the North Slope of Alaska in the oil fields.

As a reformer, she has been embroiled in a controversy of her own and there is a special investigation being conducted right now - did she or did she not ask one of her underlings to see that her former brother-in-law got fired as a State Trooper. The jury is still out.

Right now the thought of her possibly being President scares the fear of Hurricane Gustav which is heading towards Crystal Beach right out of me.

you guys are gonna love this:
is Palin’s down syndrome child really her daughters?

The nation has been abuzz today with talk of Sarah Palin, John McCain’s surprise vice-presidential pick. The internet and news media exploded in the hours following the announcement.

Along with all the stories making their way through the news cycle is one regarding Trig Palin, her youngest child. Apparently, there has been suspicion, some reported through Alaskan media outlets even before the Vice Presidential buzz, that the child actually belongs to her daughter, Bristol Palin. Normally this would be a personal issue, but this becomes a public matter because of Sarah Palin’s stance against abortion and birth control, promoting ‘abstinence only’ beliefs.

The story seems ludicrious, and surely the GOP workers that vetted her would have stopped McCain from choosing her if anything like this were true. Only, now it has come out that Governor Sarah Palin was not vetted properly. The McCain camp states that they didn’t feel it was necessary.

Even if it is entirely false and ludicrous, people are talking about it, and are quite interested in it. It has cropped up on a number of liberal and conservative blogs and sites. One Republican blog pre-empted the rumors, urging people to support Governor Palin “no matter what happens.” It is absurd to believe Barack Obama is a Muslim, but that hasn’t stopped 10% to 15% of America believing it is true. It remains to be seen if this story will sprout legs. So far, no media outlet has outright disproved the rumor (which should be very easy to do), though the Anchorage Daily News has reported the rumor.

The believers have a few scattered points:

  1. Bristol Palin left school for an extended period of time, due to mononucleosis according to her family for the last 4-5 months of Trig’s pregnancy. Some classmates claimed later that they had seen Bristol Palin pregnant.

  2. Sarah Palin did not reveal to anyone outside her family that she was pregnant until 8 months into her pregnancy. Even then, she showed no signs of pregnancy. Alaskan news outlets commented on this, but did not go further. There are pictures of her at Super Tuesday (just a month before the baby was born).
    http://www.adn.com/politics/story/339576.html
She is notably a very trim woman, so it would likely be difficult to hide a pregnancy.

  3. There are supposed photos showing Bristol Palin having gained weight, possibly significantly so in the abdomen. I haven’t been able to verify these.

  4. Sarah Palin went into labor in Dallas just before she was due to deliver a keynote address at the Republican Governors’ Energy Conference, and flew to Seattle, then Alaska while still in labor.
    http://www.newsminer.com/news/2008/a...nder-scrutiny/
Supposedly, she was in labor during the 8 hour flight, and the crew and attendants did not know.
    (Quote from the Article Above):
““Governor Palin was extremely pleasant to flight attendants and her
stage of pregnancy was not apparent by observation as she didn’t show
any signs of distress,” Boren said.”
This is extremely risky behavior, and you are advised by doctors, traditionally, not to fly once you are past 7 months pregnant. If airlines are made aware, sometimes they will prevent you from flying. Sarah Palin did not inform the flight.

  5. Sarah has had four children before, and a prolonged labor that lasted a flight from Dallas to Alaska is extremely unlikely, as labor times usually decrease with the number of births.

  6. There is also some rumor of an interview with a co-worker of Todd Palin at the oil fields in Prudhoe Bay (North Slope, where Todd Palin worked for BP), though I haven’t been able to verify this. The co-worker claims Todd told him of the situation, supposedly.

  7. Likewise, there were at the time a few classmates of Bristol’s that claimed they had seen her pregnant.

  8. Sarah Palin appeared 4 months before the baby’s birth in Vogue magazine, and was “trim and lithe.” (Searching for photos.)

Now, the counterpoints are that:
-Of course, this is all very far-fetched. Republicans would have vetted her and this would have never slipped past them
-She may not have been showing the pregnancy, despite her trim and slim frame, because of the low birthweight of infants with Downs Syndrome.
-Mothers at 44 (as Sarah Palin is), have an extremely high rate of Downs Syndrome in their children. However, this does not exclude Bristol Palin, as very young mothers also have an increased risk of Downs Syndrome in their children.
The attached photo is Sarah Palin at Super Tuesday (2-05-08), credit to Brian Wallace of the Juneau Empire.
I had another photo of Palin at the Dallas RGEC, but I cannot seem to locate it.
I was hoping you could just clear this matter up. It might make interesting filler, to have a story on what the internet has been talking about!

-This is a picture from the Alaskan Governor’s website. It is only dated “2007.” Some say that Bristol here appears to have perhaps a baby bump.

-An Alaskan PodShow Podcast called Hike of the Week. Sarah Palin appears here and takes a hike and tour with the host. She is seven and a half months pregnant.

-The Alaskan Government website has removed links to some photographs of the Palin family. This probably has nothing to do with this story here, but I thought I should mention it, for posterity.
-Here is an article posted on DailyKos that compiles much of the same information I have here.

-Here is an excerpt from a Wallstreet Journal article, accounting her labor, according to her:

Gov. Palin’s opted to board a jet from Dallas in April
while about to deliver a child. Gov. Palin, who was eight months
pregnant, says she felt a few contractions shortly before she was to
give a keynote speech to an energy summit of governors in Dallas. But
she says she went ahead with it after her doctor in Alaska advised her
to put her feet up to rest. “I was not going to miss that speech,” she
says.
She rushed so quickly from the podium afterwards that
Texas Gov. Rick Perry nervously asked if she was about to deliver the
baby then. She made it to the airport, and gave birth hours after
landing in Anchorage to Trig, who is diagnosed with Down Syndrome.
“Maybe they shouldn’t have let me fly, but I wasn’t showing much so
they didn’t know,” she says."
