Some are saying they’re turning the surviving Boston Bomber into a rock’n’roll style icon. I kind of agree and think the mag were super stupid to have him on the cover.
Stupid like a fox.[/reply]
Actually I think you find it’s “crazy like a fox”. Does anyone remember that whack 80s show?[/reply]
Big deal…Manson and OJ have been on the cover of RS also…and that same pic of the bomber has been on the cover of other publications…this feels like one of those things where a person or a group get outraged and then a bunch of other people get outraged just because they think that is what they are supposed to do…there are obviously more pressing issues out there than this…
A couple weeks ago a bunch of stick-up-their-butts conservative dumdums got incensed because of a Sam Adams beer commercial where they supposedly disgraced the Declaration of Independence by “not quoting it correctly” and omitting the word “creator” or something. It was a whole lot of foot stomping and bellyaching over exactly NOTHING.
At first I shared the reaction of outrage that some of you have expressed.
But really I think A LOT of that has to do with the way the guy looks. He’s …hot…and looks like a rock star…
As other(s) pointed out, if he didn’t, you wouldn’t bat an eyelash about this.
Are they playing him up as a sex icon? Probably. Are they grasping at controversy and relevance? Definitely. Is it really something to get bent out of shape over? Probably not.
I guess the level of outrage is really about the history of the magazine. Traditionally the cover of Rolling Stone is supposed to be the breakthrough for musical artists and pop icons. Is that really the case anymore? I have no idea but if not then this isn’t a big deal it’s just stupid on their part not worth getting angry.
Also the thing is people yelling “they are glorifying this guy by giving him attention!” are effectively doing the same thing by calling attention to it.
And yes rock n roll is dying RIP etc. Atom most of the bands you listed have been around for years, are broke, and would never sell Rolling Stone a lot of magazines. They have to shift into new territory or die as well. Frankly I’d like to see them just die because I think that magazine is an irritating PC wannabe hip liberal jerk off-fest but whatever.
Why not put a photo of the victims and survivors on the cover?
I see it as a marketing tactic to sell magazines to those who do not have a subscription by stirring up controversy in the context of “Any publicity is good publicity.” I do see the concerns some of you have on both sides of the issue on social/media responsibility: the public needs to know that criminals can come packaged in pretty gift wrap, but they also should not be romanticized or given icon status. Bundy was a physically attractive and intelligent criminal too.
Taibbi did a great article on BoA a while back.
Speaking of RS being irrelevant: What do you guys do with your magazines, save them or recycle them? I see printed magazines eventually going the way of the wagon wheel, 8-track, and cassette tape as us older people start dying. People young and old are using electronic readers in the doctor’s office, auto repair shop, and in the airport/on the plane to pass the time vs. a print copy because they have multiple options without the bulk or weight and us old people can make the text bigger without the addition of an aided viewing device. If the airline industry can eventually get to the point of allowing electronic devices during takeoff and landing (eliminate the safety concerns), I might consider e-publications as an option. Until then, I will continue to buy hardback or paperback books (I’m not much for magazines).
I saw Autolux back in 2005 with The Peels and The Ravonettes at The Social in Orlando. Autolux will open for NIN in Canada later this year.

Oh man why did you have to make me re-live the whack ass Crazy Like A Fox intro!

I only recognized 2 bands off Atoms list. Dead Confederate, but they sound like The Arctic Monkeys, ewwwww.
How is Band of Skulls not on that list??? THEY FUCKING ROCK! Like Led Zeppelin with some female vocals, grade A shit, I highly recommend.

I used to save mine. I don’t subscribe to any magazines anymore because I do all my reading on my tablet and kindle. I still go back and read some old gaming magazines i have lying around but it does seem archaic now that we have tablets and all kind of devices. The future’s here.
Looked it up. I was thinking of Hardcastle and McCormick. It has an old white haired dude and a curly headed young dude, just like the Fox show.
I was actually thinking that might be the one you meant. They had this super goofy looking kit car called the COYOTE. The kind of car that looks completely badass when you’re 10 years old . . . . and then when you’re an adult you see it and just shake your head.

completely agreed… wouldn’t be surprised if Rolling stone manufactured this controversy too bump sales.
