Jesu - Everyday I Get Closer To The Light From Which I Came

MP3s don’t get scratched. I can press play on my iTunes and it will go for just shy of four months without playing the same file twice. My car stereo has a USB port so I can carry the equivalent of a big binder of CDs in my pocket without having to fuck with it while driving. I still buy plenty of music, sure I download some, but I pay for a lot. I don’t buy music from the iTunes store because the artists get paid jack shit for that, but I love the software for how it organizes my files and for downloading podcasts. I buy a lot of music from bandcamp.com. At the record store or at shows, I love buying vinyl or cassettes that come with download codes, if there is no download with purchase, I would rather have the CD, but if it doesn’t come in an easily digitized format, it’s no biggie since I have a record player and tape deck hooked up to my computer anyway. I play a lot of records straight through, but I also love putting it on random. Granted, often random results in having to skip a bunch of shit I am not in the mood for, but when you have a library that big it can be real good for snapping you out of a listening rut by reminding you about stuff you haven’t listened to in a long time. Plus you get some really interesting or amusing transitions between songs. My favorite one ever I thought was just such a crazy juxtaposition but directly carried over the energy, I thought it was great but all my radio friends visibly cringed and went “ew what are you doing those don’t go together AT ALL!?!” Pigface “Divebomber” with no gap straight into They Might Be Giants “Which Describes How You’re Feeling”. It has to be heard to be believed, and my life is richer because of silly shit like that. Just being open to experience.

The convenience of today’s modern technology has also been a serious poison to the art of an album itself.

not only albums or music, but tv/movies, and entertainment in general. over the internet alone there is so much shit you can listen/read/watch, it’s just a blur now. back in the day it was what, couple channels on TV, movie theaters and tapes…

Back in my day all we had were a couple of rocks inside of a cardboard box to watch for entertainment.

Back in my day we just scrawled hieroglyphics on cave walls…

Back in my day we talked about how horrible everything was and we couldn’t wait for things to get crappier in the future so we could remember the good times back in my day.

Looks like we’re from the same generation.

BACK IN MY DAY . . . .

Saturday nights had two shows that aired at the same time (and we didn’t have VCR’s or DVR’s or any damn R’s to solve this problem). “Sha Na Na” and “Muppet Show”. My parents were friends with the Reeds who we would often get together with at our house or theirs and while the parents would socialize massive knock-down brawls would occurs between myself and Eddie and my sister and Sarah . . . they wanted to watch the “Muppet Show” because they were totally lame and we always wanted to watch “Sha Na Na” because it was AWESOME. Everyone was always unhappy and revenge was always being plotted. That’s just the way it was, and it worked out just fine.

Bowser…

Dude. Bow-to-the-mutha-effin-ZER!!!

He was our favorite too, by miles.
We also loved the dude with the keyboard-sleeved jacket because we thought it was totally badass when he’d act like he was playing the keys during the opening intro.

I remember watching that show every time it was on…Bowzer was the man by a mile…and the keyboard jacket guy I had forgotten about until you mentioned him and then I immediately remembered…incredible…

Always thought it was so weird that they were at Woodstock…talk about being out of place…

I know, right? I chuckle about that one too.

Back on topic…

OK, I’m now listening to the self titled Jesu album for the first time ever. That and Pale Sketches arrived this morning. I’m three tracks in and loving it (for the most part). It’s going to take some growing on me but I have a feeling - call it a hunch - that I have a new favourite band in the works.

Something is brewing…

More to come.

Oh yeah.

This Jesu album is the new way.

im pumped as hell for this one. i can assuredly say that i WAY prefer Jesu to Godflesh, across the board. the last few years of jesu have been strong but… aimless, and from what i have read, this is the album to turn it around a bit.

talking about godflesh though… http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/godflesh-first-new-recording-in-over-12-years-to-be-made-available-through-decibel-magazine/

I like it. Doesn’t stray too far from the tried and tested Jesu sound though. I’m hoping there’s a little more variety in the rest of the album.

Feeling that shit.

hahaha, well thanks.

but yeah, i think it might have to do with Jesu connecting more with how i like to write music. not to say that anything i do sounds like Jesu, mind you, but there seems to be a similarity in my ears to how Jesu works in the writing stages.

its not that i dont like Godflesh, i just feel about them the same way i feel about NIN (except… more positive), they just arent a part of who i am musically.

Homesick…works for me!
