[reply] Everyday I Get Closer To The Light From Which I Came
Pretentious album title [:P]. [/reply]
Thank you.
I refuse to listen to any band or album that writes a damn sentence for their name or album title.
As I Lay Dying
Bring Me The Horizon
I Killed The Prom Queen
My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope To The Sky
Everyday I Get Closer To The Light From Which I Came
Fiona Apple: When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He’ll Win the Whole Thing 'fore He Enters the Ring There’s No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won’t Matter, Cuz You’ll Know That You’re Right
The self titled is awesome. Conquerer is just the same thing, over and over again. I think his albums kinda drag on though, which is probably why I enjoy his EPs more. I’ll take Lifeline and Sundown/Sunrise over Conquerer anyday.

I like both s/t and Conqueror but I do agree that his full lengths can get pretty monotonous. I think I prefer every EP over any of the full lengths he’s put out.
The actual tune Conqueror is the best song jesu has ever committed to wax apart from Ruined. But yeah I prefer the EPs…ESPECIALLY when they last as long as your average LP hahaha
For all the criticism Ascension gets (from myself included) it’s easy to overlook that the opening songs are among the best of Jesu’s oeuvre. “Fools” is gorgeous. I love how it winds through passages reminiscent of the band Low before the wrenching cavalcade of drone guitar dominates the track. There’s emphasis on these lilting vocal melodies on the album that sound really sweet juxtaposed with the monotone sweep of the usual proceedings. It’s as if Justin didn’t have the confidence to let his voice shine through. Some remixes from this period would have been welcome.

The last two tracks, Mother Earth and Stanlow are pretty ordinary and could have been cut, but the rest of the album is stellar - especially Conqueror and Old Year.

“Weightless & Horizontal” is the one that’s withstood time and countless listens. Also took the longest to grow on me. A refrain that burrows into my mind and stays there to haunt.
So what is it that divides the S/T loving camp and the Conqueror supporters? I can have both. The latter is an album that works better as individual songs while self-titled is this hulking, monolithic and often impenetrable thing that requires more patience and maybe a listener’s preset appreciation for loud, funereal music.
grympysmrf said it’s unlistenable. The first three minutes of “Your Path to Divinity” didn’t get to you? How can you be so heartless?
It’s that time again. Every couple years (because that’s how long it takes me to realize I don’t remember anything that I actually listened to) I let the Godflesh-lovin’ homos give me a couple suggestions of what to try and then I listen to a couple tracks to see if I was wrong all along.
So . . . give me a COUPLE tracks that you think will blow me away and convert me to the Cult of Broadrick. Just a couple, please. I’m not going to listen to every damn album, but I promise to listen to a few tracks this weekend and be OPEN MINDED and honest . . .
