I like some pretty gay stuff, but I could only tolerate 10 seconds of that crap.
I blame the record companies for signing no talent pretty faced fucks. I’m sure there are plenty of great bands out there with potential to be Iconic superstars, but they’ll never get the exposure.
I think if everyone was humble and dull wearing boring tshirt on stage with ugly bearded audience it would suck.
Yes Broadrick I’m looking at you.
Not one vagina in the fucking room.
Just couldn’t resist a petty side swipe at ol’ skinny fingers Broadrick could ya?
Memo to you, Goth Boy: Broadrick doesn’t sell sex!
Hence the reason the chicks don’t dig it. Not all frontmen can be Chris Cornells and roll around on stage with their shirts off, revealing sweaty hairless, smooth skinned chests. They can’t all have chiseled Mike Patton-esque jawlines and pecs. They can’t all be oily and cutesy with long eyelashes like Dave Navarro.
Some frontmen have actually got more to offer than just looking good on a teenager’s wall.
(hello Gavin Rossdale, frontman for Bush, I’m looking at you)
You have to have those entertainers who are basically just big Peter Pan kids living a fantasy doing cocaine all the time it just makes life better and more colorful.
Yes. Particularly when their contracts expire and they resort to doing the Playboy thing. Pretty much all they’re good for. Like that Vanessa Hudgens chick.
Personally I blame metalcore.
Such a shitty excuse for ‘rock’ music that genre is !
I blame the queers and the Arabs and the Commies and the Firemen.

Don’t you get bitter on me, Chubby.
These lean boyish hips and enormous hard cock (complete with carved miniature swastika for those who want voidhead trivia) is hard won!

This is true. Broadrick does not sell sex.
It’s free to all GodFlesh fans as long as you keep your ticket stub.
Peligro, interesting discussion you’ve started. Personally, I think the rise of Rock Band and Guitar Hero has generated interest in a new generation of kids who might otherwise turn deaf ears to lots of the bands (some not quite as omnipresent as the GNRs and Metallicas of the world) covered in the games. Despite the sort of publicity and sustained longevity those games offer, they’re still a cultural bi-product of the nostalgic times we live in and clearly romanticizes the image of these defining bands over any social impact the bands might have made.
With the changing model of the music industry, it looks like major record companies are signing up acts left and right, putting just enough push into their promotion to get them rotation on satellite radio stations and some occasional video play. Sometimes I’ll turn on the “modern rock” or “metal” station on my DirectTV and I won’t recognize half the names even though it’s readily obvious that there was lots of capitol put into making these songs heard. The music industry has always operated in this manner - today, though, so much emphasis is put into marketing to demographics. Metalcore? Who else but the intended audience is going to care about that stuff? Sames goes for autotuned R&B etc…
Huge epochal rock acts on the level of Floyd and U2 are relics of a bygone era. There’s no interest anymore in furthering the “career” aspect of a band. Like like it or not, all the legends of rock and roll rose to prominence during times where the companies could afford to nurture their artistic whims and could leave breathing room for a fanbase to naturally form.
Even the Strokes, an oft-used example of a big, generation defining rock band, had diminishing returns with their efforts after their debut. Millions were invested in making sure they’d be a success out of the gate and anything released after, even with a fanbase in tow, was seen as a disappointment.
Veil of Maya is the new Zeppelin.
Calling it.
More like the new Cynic am i rite.
You know, you’re not the first cat I’ve heard to diss 'em like that.
Maybe I gotta look into this.
Still, VoM kicks ass. Got me listening to honest-to-God METAL again.
What’s interesting is that even though the “mainstream” is non-rock now, nothing has really come along as a suitable replacement for rock in that cultural niche. The type of character who would have been a rock fan if he or she was young 30 or 40 years ago, is probably still going to be a rock fan if he or she is young today, right? Indie isn’t dangerous enough to be the successor of the rock personality, metal is undersexed, etc.
Part of it probably relates to the mainstream no longer marketing music for older teens, since they realized the preteen audience is more conformist.
Now that people can discover anything online, I don’t know if the death of mainstream success can even be correlated with the death of a genre. If you select 10 random people and they name 10 favourite rock bands, that’s a lot less mainstream taste than 10 random people with 2 favourite rock bands, but it doesn’t mean there are fewer rock bands around.
Just teasing, bro. Nothing wrong with Cynic either. Especially if you like a little sexy vocoder. What’s Veil of Maya like?

Imagine the technical prowess of Dream Theater mixed with the likes of The Acacia Strain.
It’s… weird.
I’m not sure what the next big thing will be. But I am sure it will suck.
The next big thing. I think that’s what’s gonna happen in 2012. Music will change forever
The next big thing will be an all tranny boy band. Bank on it buddy.
Of course rock is dead, that’s why The Melvins only get a 30min set…
All simple monkeys with alien babies
Amphetamines for boys
Crucifixes for ladies
Sampled and soulless
Worldwide and real webbed
You sell all the living
For more safer dead
Anything to belong
Rock is deader than dead
Shock is all in your head
Your sex and your dope is all that we're fed
So fuck all your protests and
Put them to bed
God is in the TV
1,000 mothers are praying for it
We're so full of hope
And so full of shit
Build a new god
To medicate and to ape
Sell us ersatz
Dressed up and real fake
Anything to belong
Rock is deader than dead
Rock is deader than dead
Shock is all in your head
Your sex and your dope is all that we're fed
So fuck all your protests and
Put them to bed
God is in the TV
Let me guess . . . Marilyn Manson?
