I know. He’s done this for years too.

They sucked.

early 1994. Some dive club in Seattle. Jesus Lizard with Steel Pole Bathtub opening. Greatest gig ever since time began. Sweat was literally dripping from the ceiling and I was bruised from head to foot. At some point David Yow stripped naked and dived into the audience, cutting his head badly in the process but kept on screaming into the mic. Band didn’t miss a beat.

I don’t remember leaving the club but “came to” at 1am in a diner several blocks away, surrounded by a bunch of people I couldn’t remember. And for some unknown reason I’d allegedly ordered the world’s largest hamburger. Those were the days.

The Lizard were one of the all time best live acts. Hard to believe they “sucked”. Unless of course their music doesn’t do anything for you.

Everybody does it. Why does Japan always get the extra shit? do the distributors pay more over there?

We feel sorry for bombing them?

2nd paragraph. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonus_track

I’ve heard so many people say this and I’ve seen SOME clips which captured some of the chaotic live act. Aside from me just not giving a crap about them musically, I think one of the reasons the LIVE set didn’t really translate well is because it was such a large venue.

Yow is very antagonistic and confrontational and engages (for better or worse) with the audience. In a small club that can make for a properly dangerous, visceral, and exciting experience. But at the Arco Arena, Yow screaming at the crowd from 50 feet behind a barrier, “Fuck you, you rednecks, Sacramento sucks!” just comes across as sad and doesn’t drive people to press up against the stage or throw bottles . . . it just drives them back to the nacho bar.

Fileshare those bonus tracks like a motherfucker.
I hate any “exclusive” tracks - I’m happy to pay for music, but if you make it overly difficult or impossible for me to acquire legally, I’m gonna take it.

Impossible to acquire legally???

All you have to do is mosey on down to Inoxia (select the English language option as the site is in Japanese), fill out a form and hey ho motherfucker the goods be on their way.

Don’t steal from Justin!

My post on avalanchers about last night:

I guess I’ll post this here since I have an update on the merch booth. I got to the DNA Lounge nice and early (3:45PM) and saw the band unload equipment. I tried bumming a smoke off of G.C. Green, but came to no avail as he said that was the only one he had. Heard part of their soundcheck outside which mainly consisted of Christbait Rising and then met up with this random dude named Mike to go smoke some pot. Mike and I wound up wandering around SF after the show in the middle of the night, looking for food but that’s another story.

After a long wait, 8PM comes around and we get inside. I didn’t take a pic of the merch booth because my phone sucks, but the long sleeve is now $30. They also have a new My Own Light shirt for $20 in both unisex and girls. I also saw a Greymachine album for like $15. There were other albums, but I didn’t bother to see who they were by.

As for the show, House Of Low Culture opened and never has a live show in my adult years made me wanna go to sleep. I’m sure I wouldn’t have felt that way without the ear plugs, but I wanted to save my hearing for Godflesh. I then went and met up with an old buddy of mine from school and we got a pitcher. I then saw GC go outside and I felt the need to go talk to him since I didn’t earlier in the day. My first attempt at striking up a conversation failed because I still had the beer in my hand outside. Went back out and we talked for a few minutes. Real gentleman. I’ll give some details later on that one.

Anyways, took a break outside for Cut Hands, but anyone I talked to said they didn’t like it. Finally Godflesh came out around 11PM. I’ll give a setlist if anyone wants it. There’s just one song I didn’t know by them, but knew the rest and it’s pretty much the same show they’ve been doing the past few years. They actually kept having sound problems throughout, but I’d still put the show somewhere in my top 5. I felt a little starstruck meeting Justin Broadrick afterwards, but got to shake hands with the man and tell him what a great show it was.

Oh!! Oh!! Tell us that story! Tell us that story!!!

Actually, it’s not all that exciting. DNA Lounge has a pizza place next door that’s 24 hours, but the food is a little pricy. So Mike and I went on a mission to California St. We took a walk up Polk to get there and it felt like it took forever since we were walking uphill. We got to what ended up being a Trader Joe’s that wasn’t open 24 hours. During the walk on Polk we saw a few drugged out hookers and briefly ran into some gangbanger kids. Luckily we dodged those kids. After the failed food mission, Mike and I separated as we wound up on Van Ness. He told me to take it all the way down. I ended up trying to take a couple of shortcuts (or what I thought were shortcuts) and got little lost. Wound up back on Market St and walked back to DNA on 11th. But my food mission wasn’t completely over. As I walked back to catch the BART around 4AM I passed by a bakery and got 2 donuts for a buck. At least the SF part had a happy ending.

I’m going tomorrow night. Looking forward to hearing William Bennett’s new Cut hands project as well as a godflesh.

I will be there too. Can’t wait.

I saw Cut Hands here in Edinburgh supporting jesu around 2010…a friend who came mentioned to me afterwards that while Cut Hands was doing his thang some guy next to my pal said “this guy obviously hates us” haha…the Afro percussion Cut Hands uses is great…the rest of his music is insanely intense and not for the faint hearted. I could never listen to it for pleasure but am happy to cop half an hour live before a rock’n’roll show.

Cut Hands is William Bennett of Whitehouse fame.

Needless to say, it is pure and must be obtained.

Afro Noise Vol. I is godlike.

Cut Hands played a show a couple of years ago with some friends of mine in the basement of the record store where I got married. I missed it but I heard it was SICK.

Not the biggest Godflesh fanboy but I have to admit they were a ton of fun to see live! What I’d didn’t expect was just how good that drum machine would sound pumped through a massive system. The beats are great and they’re the loudest thing onstage and that gave everything an amazing vibe.

However much I liked Godflesh though, I felt Cut Hands stole the fucking show. I was talking with my friend after and we were both blown away by how genuinely dark and yet how at the same time precisely planned his set was. The video screen for him was brilliant as well. I am going to pick up his albums today. I’ve never been the biggest Whitehouse fan (though I loved their first one, Birthdeath Experience), but this was a whole new level. It’s like he took the belligerence of early power electronics and pared away all the waffle and added these programmed African beats to serve the same purpose as feedback. There was no velocity on the drums and it seemed most songs used the same drum kit which also lent it a monolithic air. It seemed created without one whit of concern towards commercial regards, which itself is something impressive. Yeah, color me blown away! And to see him perform the Fonda was a weird and wonderful thing in and of itself.

Yeah, Godflesh kicked ass last night. I agree about the drums. . .the machine sounded great!

And Eureka, my shirt has the SF date. Did you get one?

No shirt for me. I sooner would’ve picked up the long sleeve or the My Own Light one. I only had enough for a little bit of food and to get in the show.

Love Cut Hands.

But that shit needs to be listened to on vinyl, with a great sound system and kickass speakers with the bass turned way up.

Then…you’ll realise.

And bring on some new Godflesh!
