Yes, but you get the “gyst” of what the song is going to sound like from a 30 second sample.
For instance, the vocal style of the song is not going to change RADICALLY outside of that sound byte.
I don’t really like the minimalist “rock” approach they’ve taken here and I don’t like the grunted, muted vocal style which they’ve seemingly chosen to use on most tracks here.
I love the way it sounds and I know it will grow on some of you who are unsure about it…I heard an advance about a 3 weeks ago…it gets better with each spin, imo…
I think I’d like it better with live drums rather than the machine. I know a drum machine is the bands preference but I think live drums simply sound better.
Then I assume you liked the album Songs Of Love & Hate.
I think it’s glorious. At first glance it’s an instant Godflesh classic. Carrion for the win and Life Giver Life Taker gave me super nostalgic flashbacks to the times I first heard the band back in the early 90s…it had that certain flavour in the sound and vocals in particular. But yeah I’m a lot happier with it than I thought I’d be after the first listen.
At this early stage I’d hesitate to call it a classic. I’m not liking it nearly as much as Streetcleaner or Pure - two albums which I loved immediately.
Life Giver, Carrion and Forgive Our Fathers are a win for me so far. There are definitely some throwaway Godflesh- lite pieces to be found though.
I need to listen to this on a good set of speakers.
I think Love & Hate would’ve been a better EP with the first 4 songs, “Angel Domain” and “Frail.” The rest of it is simply filler. I haven’t got around to listening to Hymns, but I know it got a lot of hate from die hard fans for sounding more like Korn. I kept seeing the 2 disc reissue at the record store near where I previously lived. Is it worth picking up?
I just listened to it out of interest. The only Godflesh release i really cared about was Streetcleaner, and this does nothing to change my mind. I suppose they just aren’t for me. [:(]
