Pigface… all I’ve heard is GUB… again, its ok, nothing special. But I haven’t listened to it for a good 3-4 years… maybe I should dig it up and give it another spin.
Gub can be a tough listen, and to this day it’s not in heavy rotation with me. I recommend the follow-up, Fook, arguably their best album, and much more accessible (even ‘industrial’) than Gub. “Ten Ground and Down” features some good Chris Connelly vox, “Insemination” features Ogre and vox, and Atkins’ trademark drums. You can listen to samples on Amazon, songs are .89 each, and the whole album download is $8.90. Conversely, I could just hook you up with it
Amazon’s description:
“The Chicago industrial music social club gets down to the actual business of recording a good album. Revolving cast includes founder Martin Atkins, Revolting Cock’s Chris Connelly, Killing Joke’s Paul Raven, Skinny Puppy’s Ogre, KMFDM’s En Esch, and Silverfish’s Lesley Rankine. Highlights includes a funky version of Silverfish’s “Hip, Tits, Lips, Power!” (4 years before Rankine would become Ruby with Fook engineer Mark Walk) and “Insemination,” Ogre’s release valve for the mounting Puppy pressures. Embodies both dynamics (from full-on industrial assault to subtle electronic grooves) and a cohesive presence that would carry Pigface through its next few hit-and-miss endeavors.”
I’m very mixed about Pigface, although i’ve only heard Gub and Fook. I like chris’ stuff on there, some of en esch’s stuff, but sadly i’m very mixed towards Ogre’s stuff. I absolutely adore Skinny Puppy and anything else Ogre has done, but some of that stuff on Gub…I don’t know…Fook is the better album of the two. More consistent, maybe? Again, I don’t know. It’s worth checking out but i’m yet to check out the other material. I hear “A New High in Low” is a pretty interesting listen.

Dude, I love Gub-era Pigface. “Tailor Made” is one of my faves, and the live album that followed (Welcome to Mexico… Asshole) is probably my third fave Pigface album. Below the Belt rules.
Notes from thee Underground sort of turned me off a bit… “Hagseed” takes some getting used to… but I’d say, that while not my favorite, that’s Pigface’s definitive album. Just about everyone was on that.
I miss that whole family environment that was going on back then. Sure, I’ll jump on your album, will you do this little bit on mine? Pigface is the culmination of that - an entire band based on different friends getting together in the studio for some laughs…
I wish I’d been around for those early days at Wax Trax, what a cool bunch of people.
As for the later stuff, I find the “8-Bit Head” mix cd quite listenable.
mmmm, Ten Ground and Down is beautiful. I’ve only ever had the “best of pigface” and Notes from thee Underground, the latter of which I sold so I could afford the bus to work. I don’t miss it apart from Your Own You Own which isn’t on the best of.
RE: Chris Connelly’s myspace comment. RevCo is daft. That’s the whole point. Regardless though, I think it was a flippant comment - it’s just a wee blurb on mysace, nothing more. The guy has been involved with so much that I’ve read he was proud of - EveryoneD, F/I, all sorts of stuff that I can’t imagine him writing off as shite. Can remixed a Damage Manual song - there’s no way he’d think that’s daft! I think The Damage Manual is amongst the best stuff he’s been part of.
Hallo Chris, don’t worry about it - you gave me a Damage Manual album in return. It’s dark in here. and some of the smileys are different. I like this one; [sly]
