Fa sho.

I like to think of myself as somebody who’s aware of the major news in this country but this connick uprage over some skit flew under my radar…and probably for the better… it’s fucking retarded. South park has gone father than this on a weekly basis

But this is prime time ‘family’ entertainment.

Are you a member of an ethnic minority? Surely even you could grasp the idea that just because it’s not something that happened directly to you it still happens.

Oh but you middle class, white and right wing.

Ugh.

I get the impression you’re here just to stir shit up and cause fights. Everything you say is so smartarsey and inciteful.

DIdn’t you say you had emotional issues or something? It’s showing.

Nobody here has said that racism doesn’t exist. The point trying to be made (and rather well I thought) was that people get abused/singled out for any number of reasons but ‘racism’ gets all the attention by the media and it is beaten up beyond proportion. Nobody is up in arms when someone makes fun of a fat or ugly person. But if you make a racist jibe you are suddenly the scum of the earth. And the people who make the biggest fuss about racist names being tossed around are probably bullys themselves.

And yes, South Park goes further than that on a weekly basis. Is anyone up in arms over their ‘cripple’ jokes? What about the nastiness that disabled people have to contend with from day to day? Some of the horror stories you hear about handicapped people being singled out by their peers is horrendous. There’s is an intellectually disabled kid a few doors down from us who had to be withdrawn from class by his mother because the other kids (and even some of the teachers) made his life a living hell.

But you don’t see that making the papers. It’s just not politically correct enough.

Firstly, yes I can be a smart arse, so what? Inciteful, maybe reactionary would be a better description. And how dare I show emotion? yawn

I take offense when an ugly or fat person, or a person living with a disability is made fun of. For example, I find it offensive that you wrote an intellectually disabled kid. Why are they not a kid with an intellectual disability? Because the majority of people see the disability first.

I was up in arms about the recent media report from Australia about an air hostess suggesting a woman cover up while breastfeeding. You just didn’t see me talk about it, I didn’t bring it up here because well, many of you are men and don’t breastfeed and I dare not start another thread on a non Ministry related matter or I will be damned to hell [:|]

As for South Park, please, correct me if I’m wrong but I do believe they have been singled out and reported on in the past for their un-pcness?

Never stopped you before. Why are you sensitive to our opinions now?
BTW I liked your other avatar better with the wholsesome 50’s looking wife who loves anal. if you’re really sensitive to our opinions, change it back so we will like you better

As the father of a child who is half African-Amercian I find the skit to be in incredibly poor taste, but I can look past that and agree with Peligro in that it should not have been given that much media attention. That is not to say I wouldn’t punch someone in the face if they did something like that directed towards my child.

I think part of the issue here is that the performers were probably naive about the history of the black+white minstrel shows of the early 1900s, and how hurtful they were. For a more recent example of black face, and how American culture perceives it watch Spike Lee’s film Bamboozled.

No way, keep the Monroe avatar. Wholesome in the good sense.

Naive? Surely someone with a university degree is smart enough to understand what they were doing could be offensive.

Marylin stays, she was a goddess.

How many ethnic/coloureds have come to Australia with nothing and then worked hard and made xomething of themselves? How could that happen in a ‘racist’ country? What about China? You can’t even own land in China unless you are Chinese…and don’t get me started on what they are doing to the Tibetans.

A silly, harmless skit on tv and suddenly we are the worst nation on earth. Sure, we have our fair share of dickheads…

Peligro, forgive me if I’m wrong… but what I basically get from what you’re saying is that, indeed, the skit was stupid, may have been considered offensive or racist, yet one relatively petty incident shouldn’t indict an entire nation as being racist. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m inclined to agree with this manner of thinking… however, I know I may be treading on a few toes here, but I think people are being unnecessarily harsh on RedVelv.

It’s pretty easy for people on the white, middle class side of things to turn a blind eye to this and ask people who aren’t like us; ‘why are you so offended?’.

Truth is, we may be right, we may be wrong. While I wouldn’t ever class Australia as a completely racist and intolerant nation, we have our history; a white Australia policy, our treatment toward Aborigines which bordered on Eugenics, not to mention some of the policies put in place by a leadership as recent as John Howard’s (I’m not a perennial leftist Howard basher, but you gotta admit, his immigration policy towards the end of his reign was a joke).

I’ve got a lot of mates who are Somalian, and I can see how this would’ve offended them (although, most of them didn’t give a shit), and I come from a background of immigrants myself. If my grandmother ever hears the word ‘wog’, she cracks the shits. Yet it doesn’t offend me. So, it’s ultimately subjective. But at the end of the day, I have to respect her set of values.

Given the subjectivity of whether or not something is offensive… I don’t think universal broadsides fired at an entire nation are the answer. Condemnation? Perhaps. But then again… look at the intent behind the skit. Any cross burnings? No. Any white hoods? No…

now, contextualise it… it was a REPRESENTATION. A parody… of…

a family.

Not a race. And the family themselves weren’t offended, so I’ve read.

So… given the people, who were ultimately the butt of the joke weren’t offended…

why have people… generally of white skin colour… without the surname Jackson… taken it upon themselves to lead the charge of a cause they have very little to do with? Are they standing up for the common good? Taking on a noble cause?

No. The answer is far more ego based. These people are doing what the West has done for years (in relation to perceived enemies). They employ the paranoid schizoid technique of projection… the schizoid element meaning they break everything down in the most simple of terms, everything is good and evil, black and white (pardon the pun)… the paranoid element, meaning they’re inclined to label others as the aggressor and perceive themselves as the victim. The schizoid element enables them to split the positive and negative elements they perceive within themselves… and in a paranoid state, the project the most negative elements they identify within themselves unto others.

And hence, this is the reason most of the social commentators are white, outspoken, opinionated people with little to do with the cause. Harry Connick Jnr. for example. Personally, I think his overreaction served only to sensationalise and promote what was originally just a crappy pantomime and nothing more than that. But… in his bid to look good and look after his reputation, he enacted that paranoid schizoid technique of projecting everything he sees wrong with his race, which is embodied in himself, and blaming ‘the other’.

At the end of the day, I think there was no malice behind the skit. It doesn’t necessarily mean it was harmless, but it wasn’t racist given there was no racial intent. It was a representation of a FAMILY. But, these days, we’re obliged to be culturally sensitive and respect the beliefs and civic entitlements of others.
I think overreacting and going bananas about it on behalf of people we have little to do with (ie: the Jacksons, or white Aussies speaking up for the rights of… black Americans [crazy]) doesn’t solve anything. It just becomes a hot air forum. At the end of the day, uproar and offense is what gives such offensive connotations their power… I’m inclined to take the Gnostic/Buddhist approach of just laughing about it all

Orange soda is the shiznit.

Maybe. There are too many variables to say for certain.

Disney’s Song of the South (r: 1946) has never been released in the U.S. on VHS/DVD in its entirety; only select portions have found their way to U.S. VHS/DVD. However, it has been released in its entirety in many other countries.

There are also cultural disconnects between various countries when it comes to sense of humour.

That’s a good example of a cultural disconnect Mooney, I once saw it at Tower Records on an import Japanese laser disc going for over $200 [shocked] I saw Song of the South as a kid in the theater, and of course I did not get all the implications of the tar baby and Uncle Remus until much later. It will probably never get a wide mass market domestic release, which is for the best I think.

It is interesting that James Baskett who portrayed Uncle Remus, and voiced Brer Fox was the first black man to win an Oscar, albeit an honorary one, in 1948.

It was released here in its entirety on vhs. My grandparents have a copy they got in the mid to late 70’s maybe early 80’s… to my knowledge the only time they’ve been out of the country was well before vhs were created. and late 70’s early 80’s was well before internet so no overseas buying for them. I think they got it at the video rental place for like 40 bucks.(average price of a vhs tape back then) it’s even in that cheesy white clamshell case that disney is known for back then.

Bawk-b-gawk.

I too saw the movie in the theater when I was young. If I remember correctly, I think it was rereleased in 1980.

Smrfy, if it really is the entire 94 minute uncut movie that your family has on U.S. released VHS, I’m going to suggest that you make sure that they store it in as a climate controlled environment as possible because according to these, it’s one-of-a-kind item: http://www.songofthesouth.net/memorabilia/collectibles/index.html and http://www.snopes.com/disney/films/sots.asp

The White Clam shell is what they have. the one that is in the image on this web site. although it doesn’t have that green sticker thingy on it.
BTW saw this in the theaters as well back in the late 70’s early 80’s as well

Growing up, I saw MUCH more prejudice against ‘the ugly people’ than I ever did towards ethic minorities.

i know grumps quoted this too but i’d like to also say QUOTED FOR TRUTH. it’s totally acceptable to fuck with people who aren’t “beautiful”. and that’s for fuckers.
