“Every Which Way But Loose” is NOT a debacle.
It’s a CLASSIC.
Forgive me but it’s been 25 years since I last saw that film and the fine details are a little hazy.
Anyway, enough about orang-utans, how’s about that Cobain fella…

I always thought the A Team coulda used a monkey. I’m serious - a MONKEY!! Like the orang-utan in that Every Which Way But Loose debacle.

And the orangutan has a name, thank you very much. CLYDE. Please show some respect.
Preach!!!
Is it possible the real reason rock is down in the U.S. is because whites are becoming a minority and the middle class is in decline?
Aren’t those two things core components of “rock n roll”?
I really think this has fuck all to do with Cobain personally from a ground level view of it and more to do with race and economic demographics shifting.
Also if we want to delve deeper I would say:
Sociological - Rock got it’s social message component from folk music, and I think that component of it is at odds with the level of intellectual awareness and instant gratification demands of the American youth today.
Technological - rock bands take longer to record a song and it’s more expensive for them to perform than it is for the artists of other genres, so young kids getting started opt in other directions because it’s easier. Grimes did her album in GarageBand for instance.
Economic - it may be more expensive for a rock band to sustain itself in terms of travel expenses (there are more members to feed/transport), gear is heavier, etc. and with less of a guarantee of a return investment again kids opt for other genres
Pharmaceutical - prescription drugs have largely replaced the consciousness expanding psychedelics of rock’s golden era or even later, the street drugs of the 90s. What is the effect of these drugs in determining the music the youth seek, or that seems relevant to them in that state? I think it’s worth considering.
“Collage Culture” - I see the culture today as a collage culture. Elements from the past are recycled constantly in ways that are out of context. I think it’s fashionable for kids to ape certain fashion trends or attitudes of rock…but those seem to have endured more than the art form itself which requires more discipline and skill than other genres and is more expensive to pursue…Hence you have this sense of rappers saying “I’m a rock star” because the context is lost and what remains relevant now is the style/attitude; the trappings of rock so to speak and not the core meaning.
Void brings up an interesting point. I’m not sure, but I think hispanics and blacks outnumber lower to middle class whites now, or are damn close.
I think this might be a part of the reason rock has taken a back seat to hip hop/rap and that street culture. Part of it is also the music industry just wanting to sell the flashy upbeat hiphop style, as opposed to the angry “I wanna break shit because I hate myself” mantra of rock n roll.

I think the industry pushes a certain variety of hip-hop now (and ignores the more cerebral, introspective or “unclassifiable” lyrical content) because it mirrors their own interests and attitudes instead of working against them. I think it’s probably the same deal with every genre they promote, be it country or dance-pop.
Major labels are themselves pretty “gangsta” in their conduct (definitely read up on the majors’ “payola” system, and check out the book by Fredric Dannen called “Hit Men: Power Brokers and Fast Money In the Music Business.”) I think it’s just a natural development that they gave some of their biggest ‘pushes’ to talent that reflects their own values… people with dollar signs in their artist names (honorable mention to 50 Cent) who glamorize making money at the expense of anything else.
it’s not demographic shift that’s caused a rise in hip hop, it’s economic - middle class kids view rock as what their parents listen to, find nothing dangerous to fetishise about it

You are aware that black folk invented rock’n’roll right? If so you must surely understand how idiotic that statement is.[/reply]
HAHA!! I was thinking the same thing.
And as far as the Mexicans and blacks taking over . . . .
Whenever I see a metal show down here, yeah, there’s a few honkies there. But I’m mostly rocking out with the Mexicans. They love metal. And there’s a support and love of hard rock and metal and punk down south of the border that I’ve not seen here.
I think as a culture, the US youth are just too led by MTV, iPods, Target Commercials, and whatever other trend-driving media tools are relevant. There’s just not a lot of widespread support for rock at the moment. I think it’s more a laziness than anything else.
There’s a crapload of great bands still out there making noise and doing tours, and the ones that do it right (AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Ozzy/Sabbath, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Rolling Stones, KISS, etc.) are still quite successful at it. But I think it is hard for a lot of the kids to get behind the stuff their parents already labeled “cool”, or their parents’ parents, for that matter.
Kids want something that is THEIRS, not their parents’. And MTV or TeenBop or whatever will give ‘em something to fill that gap. It’s usually crap, but at least, for them, it’s their crap and not their parents’.
I saw Nirvana’s last ever UK gig in '92, it was great. I was a massive fan at the time, a 16 year old rocker and musician (dabbling in industrial), and it was a fucking perfect time for music. It then got shit and I don’t think I’ve liked many new bands since. In fact, the other day I came to the realisation that maybe I don’t even like rock music (encompassing everything from punk to thrash metal) that much anymore… I’m still trying to figure that out, tbh. I think modern music is mostly shit and I’m slightly worried that it’s not because I’m old. I think it might actually be shit. Anyway, when Cobain shot himself my mate phoned me to tell me the news just as I was trying to record Red Dwarf off the tv onto VHS. the tape snapped and I couldn’t record it, ruining my complete run of recordings. that night was a bit of a bummer all in all. however, I never cried or got all emotional. I loved the band, but the guy was just a guy making music that I loved, nothing more. i’ll save getting upset for more important things. It must have been 1993 or something when I walked passed Top Shop (a women’s fashion store) that had a “Grunge” display in it. I don’t think I’d even really heard that word before, tbh. At that point, I knew the scene was on its last legs. Then he went and popped his clogs drawing a line under it for me.

He’s just pissy because I dared to ask the question about why he started a stupid thread talking shit about the world cup. Luckily it’s evolved into what it’s evolved into now.[/reply]
HAHA! Ironically, I’ve never even looked at the thread because I have ZERO interest in SOCCER (no, I will NOT call the sport “football”). If he’d titled it “Soccer is Gay” or something, I’d probably already have written 20 pages on the topic.
It’s also kind of ironic that of all the comments in this thread, I probably share HIS sentiments more than anyone else’s.
So much irony . . . it’s like a damn hipster convention up in hurr.[/reply]
YES! I’m so sick of the media trying to ram female football down our throats. They’ve tried this for 40 years and will never understand that 98% of the people in the U.S. have zero interest in watching 0-0 ties.

Duh I’m talking about what it became. The rock n roll Rpb Zombie is referring to in the article which inspired this thread.

Rpb Zombie sucks! I’ve hated him since at least Astrp Creep 2ppp, La Sexprcistp was bombastic crap too, he should go back to his npise rock roots!
I’ve hated Rob Zombie for longer than that.
I’ve hated him for longer than o’s became p’s.
Basically I hated him since before I was born.

But…will you give him another chance when he is reborn as RQB Zombie? He still has time to turn over a new leaf.

As long as he dies first he can be reborn as whatever he likes. Preferably someone completely different, though. Like Tom Jones . . . or Scott Bakula.
He secretly wants to be John Carpenter - so badly.

Don’t we all?
King Buzzo nailed it when he said “if Kurdt looked like Fat Albert, Nirvana would’ve sold a minimal amount of records and the majors wouldn’t have touched them.”
Funny, a friend and I were watching that Seattle grunge documentary called “Hype!” (1996) on NetFlix and they noticed that all the bands being interviewed that didn’t “make it” weren’t good looking people compared to the ones that did.
Haha what a surprise!
Michael Bolton sells a ton of records because he’s a total hottie.

The bronzed, chiseled, Adonis-like members of TAD surely have to be an exception to this rule…

I always liked that song “Grease Box.” Reminds me of that Edward Furling movie Brainscan.

That movie RULES! I just watched it like a week ago. TRICKSTER!!!
Perhaps a bit of a Freddy derivative, but I think it had unrealized franchise potential too.
