Captain Beefheart Dead At 69

I just bought Trout Mask Replica a few hours ago.

Now this…!

Very sad. He was indeed the master. Safe As Milk could very well be the greatest album ever made.

RIP

Big fan of Safe As Milk but not so much the rest of his material, I like most of it piece-meal.

And, of course, “Willie the Pimp”.

Very talented. Gotta admire a guy to retire to paint, but give up a day job

Safe As Milk / Trout Mask Replica / Lick My Decals Off

All that needs to be said.

A dead set legend.

As influential to the avant garde scene as Zeppelin were to rock music.

Beefheart ruled. He’ll be safe as milk in the afterlife!

What this world needs is a good two dollar room and a good two dollar broom.

I think even beyond that. All those ‘math-core’ bands, like Dillinger Escape Plan (vomit) really do owe a lot to him. Listen to ‘Dali’s Car’ for a good example of this.

When you put him next to Zappa, it’s pretty obvious who the genuine eccentric was. With Zappa, it was more of a front; musical sophistication leavened by weird shit. Watching interviews with Zappa is a bit of a reality check… he’s basically a crashing bore.

On the other hand, Beefheart was pure weirdness leavened by musical sophistication. I personally think not only the avant garde, mathcore, etc etc owed a lot to him, but Zappa himself. And, I would suspect they both knew that deep down, given the enmity between the two.

To me, Zappa and his band (at least the post 1970 stuff) reminded me of what it would be like if The Late Show With David Letterman band started playing ‘kooky’ music - y’know technically proficient 40 something jazz rock aficianados with pony tails lettin’ their hair down a bit and going a bit silly. Fifteen minute jazz rock wank a thons with lyrics about vegetables and teenage girls with big thighs?!?! Sorry but I’ll pass.

‘Freak Out’ is damn fine though as is ‘We’re Only In It For The Money’, ‘Uncle Meat’ and ‘Lumpy Gravy’.

But yeah, Beefheart was the man. Even if he did like to jerk off at…ahem…inappropriate times (according to rumour).

“Weird” Al + artistic pretense = Frank Zappa

Beefheart was the read deal.

Zappa was great you’re all nuts?

This isn’t a Beefheart vs Zappa thread.

And by the way… Beefheart released just as much garbage as Zappa did.

I’ve only listened to bits of Beefheart but I’ll try to give it a better sampling over the next couple days. If anyone wants to link some “must hear” tunes for me I’ll give 'em a shot.

My reaction, though, was pretty much the same as I have to Tom Waits which people get uber-gay for as well. I just think to myself, “Yeah? And?” It doesn’t do anything for me.

As for Zappa . . . . there are a few songs that I can enjoy, but about 99% of it is tinkering, improvised, douchey, jazzy dogcrap. The only way I can get more than one song I like is to buy some cheesey sampler disc (“Cheap Thrills” was a good one) as they’ve done the work for me of sifting through 8,000 hours of pretentious wankery for a small batch of listenable songs.

Yeah, Beefheart is difficult I must admit. Don’t care much for Tom Waits apart from Bone Machine.

Do the required research before you splash cash on Zappa. There are a few good ones but most is jazz rock junk and will bore you stupid…unless of course you are a 45 yr old guitar store employee, with a pony tail, thick rimmed glasses, facial hair and a pot belly. And your name is Nigel.

HAHA!!! Perfect.

Zappa’s discography isn’t as spotty as you might think. It’s really up to you, as a listener to decide what era interests you more - the early esoteric Mothers material, the hard-rock/fusion of much of the 70s or his forays into classical (most of his later day works). There are a few albums that really miss the spot, but it’s hard for me to say there aren’t at least moments on every effort that entertain.

We’re Only In It For the Money, Freak Out!, Hot Rats, Apostrophe, Joe’s Garage, You Are What You Is. All consistently great!

THE CAPTAIN DIDUNT WRITE SHUIT WHEN ITi CAME TO MUSIC YO. I wouldn’t say it’s the best song off the album but certainly the funniest…along with Bobby Brown Goes Down…

The version in the Baby Snakes movie is my favorite…

There;s a lot of faggots, idiots, and downright negros in this fuckin’ shit
