@Gunnar don’t ever compare Risa Reaper to Jordison. No she ain’t all that great at drums, but I’d rather sit thru her simplistic playing than Jordison’s. Unfortunately I’ve had to sit thru slipknot at ozzfest 5 years ago so that sums it up for me. Plus she ain’t that bad for a chick
Not only is Maniac banging Vivian Slaughter(bass), they happen to be engaged and have their own band called Sehnsucht. Far different from what they’re known for.
As far as Jon’s suicide goes, it’s ironic that it happened after their cancelled US tour. It’s kind of a funny thought I have that Jon killed himself bc he couldn’t get his visa cleared due to his criminal record
We were right up front and saw a bunch of the inside crap that no one else saw leading up to all that craziness (like BLS’ roadie “Dave” letting all the kids into the pit and seeing him climb up on stage with his US flag and a bunch of other crap).
Mostly everyone was just confused about what was going on with the power cutting out and such. The best part about that show is how badly it backfired on Sharon. NO ONE gave a crap about her stupid crusade but Maiden handled it like pros and Bruce came out looking like a total badass.
When she took stage and whined about Bruce being a “prick” everyone just screamed back at her that she was a “c*nt”.
Almost half the audience left before or during Sabbath’s set (I felt bad for the band, other than Ozzy who didn’t even know the words to his own songs).
Seriously, though, you were blessed to have been there. That show was metal history at its finest.
As for Slipknot. I was kind of excited when I first heard they were added to the bill. I’d never seen them before and wanted to see what the hype was. The music was crap and there were like 28 overall-wearing jackasses on stage. One guy walked around with a baseball bat. Another one just humped an oil drum. I couldn’t understand how there could be so many people doing so little.
Wow you were up in the front for that shit?! I was on the lawn. In between mudvayne and slipknot I was going to each of the bonfires throwing bible pages in the flames. Some guy wrestled the remnants out of my hands. During slipknot I was enjoying watching the skins beat each other up ion the pit more than the band.
Then we get to Maiden. I wasn’t really that stoked about seeing them anyways, but the power going out made it that much funner. Do you remember when it first went out? I believe it was during Number Of The Beast when Bruce hits the high note. Of course the most memorable moment during the set was Hallowed Be Thy Name. Eggs getting thrown and the crowd having to sing the outro. I wonder what Bruce did to the person who got busted with the eggs. I heard it was some friends of Kelly Osbourne. As for why Sharon called him a prick, I believe that was due to him calling Sabbath a bunch of hasbeens every night of the tour.
Honestly that whole day was one of my worst concert experiences ever. But the few minutes I got to see Rob Zombie and the Maiden set were the highlights of the day/night
Yeah, it was awesome. I wasn’t really into most of the bands on the bill so we came a bit later. We did catch Zombie’s set. That was pretty cool. Just a dirty mess of dirty dirt. It was like a clowd of filth down for that one (2nd stage act). It looked crazy from a distance.
I don’t really even remember any of the other bands . . . Shadows Fall, Black Label. Nothing impressed me, so I mostly just hung out until Slipknot (I should’ve just kept drinking beer and eating nachos for that one).
Glen Helen is a rough venue. First off, they have the worst logistics of any arena ever. There’s that stupid one lane in one lane out crap for a 70,000 capacity venue. Parking is friggin’ wild wild west style. You either pay to park in an unmarked forest or you take your chances on the outskirts on the side of some dirt road.
And coming out . . . . ugggh. Forget it. It took us like 3 hours to get out of there.
And what you said about the skinheads, it’s no joke. For some reason that location really pulls in the scum of the Earth. There’s always a bunch of racist goons thinking it’s fun to yell “White Power!” or some such gayness. The first time I went to Ozzfest (1999, I think, when Ministry was SUPPOSED to play) it was really embarrassing. I saw one black kid with his friends and there were like 8 fat retards behind him shouting “White Power” and doing the lame ass Sieg Heil salute thing. Made me ashamed to be white, to be honest. But that year was particularly bad because PANTERA seems to bring out the worst of the worst. Friggin’ stupid ass hillbilly redneck goons.
As for who threw the eggs in '05 – basically Sharon and Kelly just recruited a bunch of losers from a nearby mall or something and offered them free Ozzfest jackets or something stupid.
I don’t remember which was the first song to get power cut out. I’m thinking it was “Phantom of the Opera”.
As for that man kiss between Kvarforth and Maniac…
THAT WAS FUCKING COOL.
Seriously, the way it freaked out so many people was awesome. I pretty much like everything Kvarforth does, except for chucking Moonlight Sonata in one of his songs. Outside that, he’s a great showman and one of the few doing something pretty unique and tongue in cheek to boot. Oh, and the music is good as well. Not that that’s important… [laugh]
RE: Gallhammer drummer vs Jordison.
No, she’s worse than him.
I don’t think Jordison is that bad a drummer. I don’t see why people rip on him. My only criticism is that he completely rips off Skitz Sanders, and has not once mentioned him in an interview or given him any credit. It’s fucking painfully obvious!
^
I’m quite certain that Gallhammer bimbo is the worse of the two drummers. After all, she’s playing their own song. My main blasting of Joey as a lacklustre performer was based on him on sticks for the Ministry RGB tour. He was lost and dull.
I really wasn’t paying much attention to him when I saw Slipknot. The whole show seemed like a trainwreck so I wasn’t really focusing on any particular musician.
