Black metal

[reply]Vocals!! blech any body can grow incoherently and then make up some death poetry to put in the booklet and claim you’re “singing” that! some of the actual music is very melodic but that "ungry dog growl"just ruins everything!

I agree, the singing kills it for me too. Any good black metal bands that don’t have that constipated demon voice? Or Death Metal for that matter?[/reply]

Dimmu Borgir does something cool where they have a guy sing pseudo-operatically to contrast with the witchy vocals, and combined with their use of symphonics they get a real epic soundtrack feel. And somebody sinks a lot of money into their videos:

Of course, hardcore black metal fans hate Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth for their success. It’s always the way.

i can usually figure out whether a song is good or blows within about 8 seconds. been listening to stevie wonder’s back catalogue lately.golden lady is pretty sweet, in the broader world. despite being white, there’s some soul in my genes.

That was not bad I suppose I like the falsetto voice better than the undecipherable growl. Still don’t think I’m gonna waste any $ on this genre yet though.
I Like that chicks boobies! that certainly was a plus!

Granted Peligro is right in saying that with any genre there are good acts and the crap that usually gives the rest of it a bad name. This band I ran across named Cumbeast probably falls in the latter catagory, this is either plain ridiculous or a complete put-on.

  • not to imply that the above band is Black Metal in any way… they are in fact BRUTAL DEATH METAL [pirate] [pirate] [pirate]

one word bathory

Rofl - wtf did you write this in this thread? Haha, you kook.

In response to you though, I only heard Innervisions in the last year or so, and Golden Lady was a stand-out to me as well, it’s so at the opposite spectrum of what I normally listen to, but I had some connect with it. It is a lovely song.

Livin’ In the City is a fackin’ awesome song too, oh I can listen to that one over and over.
Higher ground is on there too right?

Cumbeast. [laugh]

I hate this “gwee-gwee-gwee” death-metal-type hardcore stuff. The scene’s been really big around here for a while and it pisses me off.

Black metal, for the most part, is no better.

despite being white, there’s some soul in my genes.

Everyone here’s got soul ed…if they didn’t they wouldn’t be in here![cool]

an easy way to test if you are with a soulless person is if one of those sliding electronic doors does not open for them on thier way in, say, one of those kwik-e-marts… or if they can’t fog up glass w/thier breath= no soul

Omg… I don’t think it’s a put on, I checked out a few of their other songs. But surely that is a frog croaking with effects over it - not human vocals rofl.

Haha… I found these linked from that page - I just love the names

And it just goes on like that… they are all shit BTW.

I sense a recurring theme…

Dimmu Borgir is total shit, always was.

For all of you criticizing extreme vocals… try them. It might be easy to scream for 5 minutes indecipherably but try actually singing in this manner for 2 hours every night on tour, hitting all the notes, repeating the aggression etc.

Its not easy and there are not that many really talented growlers out there. This applies to black metal, death metal and any kind of music that features vocals like this.

Anyway, back on the topic of black metal - pretty much over in most of Europe (France is over also, although it was going strong for a while) but quite interesting when it comes from weird countries like Malaysia, Iran or… USA.

One of my favorite current BM bands happens to be from the UK though. Anaal Nathrakh. Its basically just total destruction. Amusingly, their singer has a Ph.D. in philosophy…

Venom just re-released their cd “black metal”

doesn’t steve martin also have a doctorate in philosophy?

Of course, hardcore black metal fans hate Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth for their success. It’s always the way.

Sorry folks, but that is not black metal. Just coz they wear stupid corpse paint and have the occasional tremelo guitar picking and blast beats means fuck all. Their over produced shit is little more than a bastardised misappropriation of the black metal aesthetic. This can be likened to considering Green Day a ‘punk’ band…

I’m a HUGE fan.

I mean the music sucks but the scene is hilarious.

I’m the same, I have a couple of books about the scene, and am more fascinated with the mindset of some of these guys than any of the actual music. ‘Lords of Chaos’, by former Boyd Rice protege Michael Moynihan, is a good look at the scenes beginnings and the whole Euronymous/Varg Vikernes episode. Lots of good interviews.

What I love about the ‘mindset’ is to me, this is the only genuine form of metal that exists at the moment. Don’t get me wrong; Iron Maiden, et al were the most extreme metal bands for their time, so they are perfectly legit in my eyes.

Then the Norweigians came along. People who, for whatever reason, had some axe to grind and attempted to transpose the extremity of the music they played to the lives they led.

That’s why I like it. I cannot stand these metal heads who play or listen to metal which is polished and produced, yet claim it’s ‘brroOoOoTAL’. The sort of beer swilling morons you’d meet at a HELLYEAH gig or whatever. Or any Roadrunner band. It’s just a complete contradiction and a put on.

There’s plenty of great black metal out there to discover - you just have to sift through the trash to get to the gold.

Obviously the biggest drawback in this genre is repetition and the one-dimensional themes.

This is fucking true about sifting through the chaff to get to the wheat. I am sick to death of people constantly decrying the black metal aesthetic on account of a few shitty bands. Admittedly, the emphasis on black metal is a minimum on production values and many hi-freq (eg; shrill guitars, vocals) elements which can make it more unlistenable than most other styles of music when done badly.

But when it’s done well, it’s fucking amazing. Listen to Mayhem’s latest album, Ordo Ad Chao. Quite possibly one of the best black metal albums to have come out in years.

I certainly wouldn’t say the themes are one dimensional. NSBM and ‘Fuck Jesus’ bands aside, there seems to be a new wave of BM’er’s who place an emphasis on obscure (occult is more fitting, but… I’d hate to be regarded a BM cliche [angelic]) spiritual or historical themes. For example, Ordo Ad Chao has a lot of lyrics revolving around the Annunaki, Gnosticism and Baal’bek. Look those up if yer bored.

Then there’s bands like Watain, and Funeral Mist. The latter in particular, who’s spiritual bent on Gnosticism was such that many other black metal bands were accusing them of being Jesus freaks at one stage.

I love this music on account of the philosophical basis for it. It’s about pushing music to it’s extremes. Playing the fastest, for longest, and the most unrelentingly. This can be interpreted in a variety of ways. The way in which I find it most interesting is that of the Nietzschean and Gnostic perspectives (even though they are not entirely consistent with each other…). The idea of ripping a blast beat or tremelo picking yer guitar or shrieking til your voice is fucked can be related to a willingness to push your capacity to do these things. To go above and beyond yer fellow musicians. It’s about achieving a different state of mind and taking yourself above and beyond what your physical self limits you to.

I probably just sounded like the biggest wanker, but fuck it. Overzealous as I am (maybe because I am a young man), hopefully that will demonstrate that not everyone playing black metal out there is mindlessly hitting shit and saying ‘Fuck Jesus’ while wearing stupid corpse paint (btw… the only person who could ever get away with that was Dead. Noone before or since).

And you gotta admit the music is amazingly pish too. I mean the vocalist ALWAYS sounds like an old witch getting pooned up the bum with a broom-stick. I’ve no idea what the lyrics are about but I’m pretty sure I could take a wild guess.

I strongly suggest you listen to the back catalogue of Attila Csihar.

I think you were pretty spot on in that… Black metal is such a broad term ranging from mallcrap like bleeding through to venom…

I think the occult stuff is more or less just a progression from people being metal by having a pentagram… so the next groups gotta one up them and be a little more brutal, take it a bit further, next thing you know everyone gotta have the book of enoch and read sitzchen as opposed to like the satanic bible or something…

I remember an interview with Bowie once when somebody asked him about the crowley stuff and he said it was more or less just to have one of crowley’s books in his pocket to look interesting then believing in any of it. (which is bullshit if you look into bowie and the occult but still). instead of making a statement with piercings or corpsepaint they make one with who they can reference as being into. like poets getting together and quoting random nobodies to appear intelligent and cool

i can usually figure out whether a song is good or blows within about 8 seconds. been listening to stevie wonder’s back catalogue lately.

That’s just fucking stupid. I’d like to stick my cock in Stevie Wonder’s useless eyes and cum in them while he twinkles on his piano. That fat fuck.

the conversation here at one time pointed in a certain direction of blackness. it was supposed to be funny, but maybe there are those out there who can’t take a joke. what do i know. keep up with the good work voidhead! (watching naked gun 33/3 currently).

For a minute, I shat myself and thought you were referring to me being spot on that I was a wanker! [laugh]

Spot on reference to the Book of Enoch… prevalent in a lot of the ‘brainier’ black metal bands these days… funny thing about the word occult. Trying to explain it’s literal definition as ‘hidden’ to my mother was fun when she started to worry about the all the ‘Satanic shit’ I was getting into. Ironically, the viewpoint of the more well-read and astute black metal bands would only be deemed as blasphemous for it’s derivation from Gnosticism which pretty much decried the notion of religious hierarchy and did away with the physical notion of Jesus’ resurrection.

Back to what Bowie was talking about, what he sez about not believing in it is one of the most fundamental viewpoints of any (non-Le-Veyan) Satanist. You refuse to believe, because doing so totally obfuscates the ability to perceive possibility. Ideas and open minds aren’t the problem; belief and mindless following in the innately misguided pursuit of an answer is. And there are those who play on those notions to create their own religious hierarchy to dominate the masses.

Hence, why Anton LaVey is a fuckwit for peddling his little ‘Church of Satan’.

Btw, to Special Ed.

I got the joke. [laugh]

And all the other jokes on this forum. [laugh][laugh][laugh]

You’d be amazed at how many BM’er’s actually have a sense of humour… [;)]

Cradle Of Filth has to be one of most pathetic examples of ‘black metal’ of all time.

I remember an interview with Danni Filth where he described hearing Wolf Eyes for the first time and declared it as “just stupid noise”.

Oh the irony.

I heard Cradle Of Filth for the first time and declared it as “just some vaguely goth Iron Maiden fans who decided to form a band in between watching repeat episodes of Charmed, reading Anne Rice and working at Blockbuster video”.

I’d kill for the opportunity to go up to them in the street one day, tap them on the shoulder and say: excuse me…you’re doing it wrong.

I’d kill for the opportunity to go up to them in the street one day, tap them on the shoulder and say: excuse me…you’re doing it wrong.

I think they’d probably reply…“well we’re making a shitload of cash so we’re doing something right!”
