You’re kidding right?

But still no one talking about Daniel Johnston?

Despite your hyperbole, I’ll back you on Daniel Johnston.

Cool word dude!

Daniel Johnston is superb stuff. He’s so simple and innocent.

mqhanlon is now part of Toot’s cool club.

yeah i am serious with mike patton… he actually does write the music to songs… i mean the first fantomas cd was completely written out before he even found people to be in the band with him…
i’m just guessing you’re not a fan

Morrissey

John Cale

Morrissey

BOKE!

Still cant stand Morrissey. I tried getting into the Smiths and his solo stuff but I cant. What to do you see in him? A serious answer would be nice too, Im curious.

My take: I like Morrissey’s voice (some may call it a ‘whiney croon’), and the dry humor he injects into his lyrics. Morrissey’s lyrics avoid being trite, and he can fashion some memorable lyrics out of the most absurd statements. I can see why some can’t stand the guy, but I think he has a really distinct voice. The Smiths are among my favorite bands, because they rarely wrote a song I didn’t like. Marr is one of my favorite guitarists, and I was always impressed with how much quality vs. quantity The Smiths released in such a short existence. They barely made it 5 years, and I can’t fit all my favorite Smiths songs on a single CD. I like Morrissey’s solo career as well, though his recent material is nothing to write home about.

I can take Morrissey in mild doses.

Make that 2 BOKE’S!

I heard Phil Anselmo is actually a big fan. No lie.

True that. Pantera was up here in 94, and they asked him about Curt Cobain’s suicide. He went on about how Nirvana’s music wasn’t depressing, and if you really wanted to shoot yourself, you should put on an old Smith’s album.

Good ol Phil.

hmm i dont find The Smiths to be depressing at all, but maybe its just me. might be that “whining” quality that was mentioned. truly depressed people don’t whine because they know its futile!

but i guess i can see why some of you enjoy Morrissey and the Smiths. it seems like the guy can be quite ridiculous in an abstract way that forces a polarizing response. ill have to admit that my bias against Morrissey might also have to do with the kind of people that I know who listen to him or the Smiths. also, whats with all that meat is murder bullshit?

Marr is a quality guitarist but Morrissey is a hyped-up self indulgent twat. ‘Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me’ is a class tune though.

Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me. No hope, no harm… just another false alarm.

Nope, nothing depressing about that.

The Headmaster Ritual - near perfection.

joe escalante who does a morning radio show in LA on 103.1 and who was in the vandals has a morrissey cover band that does shows regularly–sweet and tender hooligans. that’s some morrissey love right there.
i don’t get it.

Man, I might catch some serious heat for this, but I think Ryan Adams has a place high on this list. Not up there with the greats or anything, but he’s highly prolific, and at least half of his output is pretty good. The other half is another story.

Meat is murder is my favourite release by them. Great stuff.

ryan adams has a nice hairdo. perfectly acceptable vocals.doesn’t quite cut it, despite the letterman show. there’s a long list of peeps who’ve appeared there and GOODBYE. yeah his production work is average.
sorry. no flak here, just waiting for some miracles, marrying lyrics and music. rare. connelly has hit it a few times.
sigh. yet again, i’m the biggest homo on the planet.
